Students get ready for publie speaking
Grey students have been getting
ready for public speaking. Grades 1
and 2 prepared storytelling
presentations and Grades 3-8 have
written and presented speeches.
Students were selected to represent
their class in the school’s public
speaking competition, held on Friday
in the gym. Congratulations to all
who have worked so hard to prepare
for public speaking, and a special nod
to those who progressed to school
competition.
In the primary storytelling
competition, Janessa Smith placed
third, Ryan Baan placed second and
Chelsie Terpstra placed first. All three
will be competing at the Brussels
legion on Feb. 26 as will students
from the junior and intermediate
divisions. In the junior speeches,
Kalem Hammermeuller placed third.
Cole McLean placed second and
Derek Bachert placed first. Among
entrants from the Intermediate
division, Alyshia Lewis placed third,
Amber Daugherty placed second and
Tanya Bechard placed first.
In Mrs. Smith’s kindergarten class
they are learning how to be
community helpers. They are
learning the D sound and all about
policemen, they are also making
shiny valentines.
In Mrs. Bowler’s kindergartens are
making a booklet entitled What I Like
To Do In The Winter, each of the
students is drawing a picture and
saying what they like to do in the
winter.
Mrs. Bowler has a few special
activities that children in her classes
take home each week. One of the
activities is called The Cutting Box.
The student who takes The Cutting

based on instructions from Bell

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, a COP

designed to improve fine motor skills
and their dexterity with scissors, as
well as cutting out pictures and
gluing them in a book that each
member of the class contributes to
when it is their turn to take home The
Cutting Box.
Another activity that the
kindergarten students enjoy taking
home is the Super Kid box. The super

Tl.e student writes and draws pictures
about all the things that Marshmallow
does with the host family during his
visit. Marshmallow sure has some
interesting adventures, travelling as
far away as Niagara Falls with
Jasmin.
The Surprise Bag is also an
interesting take-home activity that
students love. Each week the student
who has the Surprise Bag selects
something special and writes three
clues about it. The rest of the class
tries to figure out the clues to guess
what is hiding in The Surprise Bag.
The Surprise Bag was at the
Mitchell’s house this week and
Sean’s clues said that his surprise was
green, had big tires, a motor and a
muffler, and that it could pull things.
Can you guess what was in the
surprise bag?
Miss Van Bolhuis’s morning class

They are doing Valentine writing
activities.
All of the SCC students have

Bashkir, who did her speech on curly
questions and hear public opinions.
Graham Nesbitt, director of
recreation for Huron East, will also
attend the meeting to speak to the

for children in outlying communities
of Huron East.
The same group of volunteers that
brought you the Ethel Community
Christmas Celebration is again
preparing to host the first annual
Ethel Community Snowfest,
(lncidently, that name was thought
of by Jesse McKinnon, the self-
appointed mayor of Ethel).
The Snowfest is scheduled for
horses, and Curtis McKinnon, who
did his speech on tornadoes. From
Grade 6, Dakota Adams, whose
speech was on Adventures with
everyday wildlife, and Taylor Prior,
whose speech was on rotational
grazing, both made it to the gym.
Tyler Deitner from Grade 7 did his
speech on being in Grade 7 and Jim
Cochrane from Grade 8 spoke on
leaving public school.

their class by telling their stories in
the gym.
