Midget Dogs reach WOAA final

Brussels Tykes
lose to Zurich
The Brussels Tykes took on a
tough competitor, Feb. 8 when
Zurich came to town.
The visitors scored first, but just
moments later, Brock McLean took
a pass from Bryce Armstrong and
Anthony Vader to event the tally.
In spite of goalie Brody Tenpas’s
numerous saves, Zurich added three
more before the first buzzer.
Early in the second, a break-away
by Mitchel Kraemer went
unrewarded then Tenpas stoned a

With a rocky start to game four in
their best-of-five series against
Zurich, the Brussels Bantams were
unable to recover and clinch the
series.
Brussels was looking for their
third win when Zurich came to town

The Brussels Crusaders are down
two games to none in their WOAA
playoff series with the Elora Rocks
but both games have been close on
the scoreboard.
On Friday the team opened the
series losing 7-4 in Elora.
Scoring for Brussels were Josh
Beuermann, Grant Jarvis, Dave
Lewington and Brian Oldfield.
Assists went to Mark Wilson, Chad
Haggitt and Brett Fischer.
On Sunday at the BMG arena, the
two teams played a hard-fought
affair. Brussels got the opening goal
as Oldfield scored with help from
Clint Fischer and dan Bradfield.
Elora scored two unanswered
goals but the Crusaders tied it up
again as Chris Stewart scored with
help from Cory Bragg and Corey
Campbell.
Zurich break. However, they did
tally two by the end of the period.
The first minutes of the third were
exciting for Mitchell Kellington
because he not only scored on a
break away, but got on the
scoreboard for the first time this
season.
Tenpas continued his strong play,
stopping solo efforts by Zurich, but
their strong offence resulted in two
more netters to make the final score
8-2.

effort, scoring early in the second.
Zurich regained their three-goal lead

Brussels worked hard in the final
frame, shutting down the Zurich
offence and tallying two from
Shayne Cochrane and Matt White

James Cochrane and Chris Jutzi.
However, the effort fell short and
the hometowners lost 4-3.

The Blyth Midget Bulldogs
eliminated Wallace in playoff action
and will now meet Tiverton in the
WOAA final.
The Bulldogs hosted Wallace
Feb. 3 needing a tie or win to
move on. Wallace scored the only
goal in the first period, but the
Dogs’ Neil Salverda tied the game
early in the second period. Joel
Riley and Kirk Stewart picked up
assist.
Wallace took the lead shortly after,
then Andy Toll tied the game with a
powerplay goal. Assists went to Cole
Stewart and K. Stewart.
Once again Wallace took the lead
Blyth Atoms sweep Hensall
The Blyth Atom Bulldogs
defeated Hensall Saturday,
eliminating them from further
OMHA playoffs. The Dogs won the
series 3-0.
Game one was Saturday, Feb. 1.
The Dogs came out hungry, scoring
two in the first. Colin Bokhout
scored off the face-off, assisted by
Dallas Pennington. Pennington then
scored from Tolson Carter and Tyler
Middegaal.
The Dogs played well defensively
until Pennington scored his second
of the game from Middegaal and
Tyler Black. That was all they would
need as Hensall failed to beat Grant
Sparling.
The final score was 3-0 for Blyth.
Game two was in Blyth, Feb. 3.
The first goal wasn’t until early in
the second, when Pennington buried
the biscuit from Black and Bokhout.
Bokhout scored Blyth’s second goal
from Michael McDowell then Blyth
rounded out the scoring with
Pennington scoring from Black and

Brussels made a final run at the win

The team pulled together for a
strong offensive effort with
McClinchey netting three and Adam
McClure and Matt White each

their opponent to two goals, help to
secure the game win 5-2 and the
series victory in the fifth game.

brilliant solo effort to again tie the
game. With 10 minutes remaining
in the third period K. Stewart
finished off a passing play with
Riley and C. Stewart to give the
Dogs a 4-3 lead.
With the Wallace goalie on the
bench, K. Stewart pounced on a
loose puck and potted an empty-
netter to give Blyth a 5-3 win and the
series seven points to one.
Dog goaltender Travis Shelton had
a huge game in the Blyth net.

consecutive shutout.
The Atoms received some bad
news as defenceman Whitfield
broke his wrist on a hit during
the game. Whitfield’s defensive
skills will be missed, although
the coaches are confident he
will return before playoffs are
over.
Game three was Saturday in

Blyth travelled to Tiverton Sunday
night to open the WOAA final. In a
penalty-filled game the Dogs came
out on top 7-3 to take a one-game
lead in the best of five. K. Stewart
scored three times for the Dogs with
Riley and C. Stewart each adding
two. Assists went to C. Stewart, two;
K. Stewart, two; Darren Austin, C.
Bernard, T.J. Marks, Mike Bean and
Riley.
Shelton again played well in net
for Blyth.
Game two of the series is Monday
night in Blyth with game three in
Tiverton Sunday, Feb. 16 at 6:15
p.m.
