The Citizen, 2003-02-12, Page 3Don't forget euchre at the Blyth Legion Monday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. We are sorry to hear that Reg Hesselwood is a patient in Clinton Public Hospital. We hope he will soon be home. Dorothy Scott is a patient in the Wingham hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery. The Legion Auxiliary had 17 tables on Feb. 3 and raised over $400 for the Clinton hospital. Door prizes went to Delores Howatt, June Pattison, Mary East and Peg Menzies. Everyone enjoyed a lunch after playing cards. Congratulations to Todd and Annette (Vincent) Edgar of Wingham on the birth of their son, Feb. 4. Dan and Shelley, Vannesa and Dane Nichels, of Port Albert, Terry and Deb Pierce and Bernice Pierce of Blyth went to Ottawa to visit with Jennifer Pierce. They toured the Parliament building and skated on the canal. It was a wonderful weekend. The ice sculptures were really nice. Greeting at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Feb. 10 were Lorna Fraser and Judy Gleave. Ushering was Chris Gleave. Lynda Lentz- MacGregor was guest musician. The children gathered at the front of the church. Rev. Eugen Bannerman told them of a poem, Good Morning To You. He then taught them to sing the song to the tune of Happy Birthday. They then sang Happy Birthday to Hanna Ortman. The dramatized Lectionary Reading Isaiah 40: 21-31 was read by Brandilyn and Wyatt Bearss and Jonathan Hakkers. Responsive reading was the 147th Psalm (Part 1). Gospel reading was Mark 1: 29-39. Rev. Bannerman’s message to the adults was “The Purpose of Jesus”. Jesus taught about praying. There are 17 references in the Gospels. He prayed at night, in the morning, before meals, before miracles of healing, before teaching his disciples and before making important decisions. This might give some idea how Jesus handled stress. From the beginning of His life to the very end Jesus prayed. There are many ways to sort out life’s meanings but it is always a quiet place that one feels close to God, Rev. Bannerman said. Everyone was invited downstairs for lunch which was followed by the annual meeting. There were 48 members present. There was a minute’s silence for members who had passed away during the last year. On Thursday, Jan. 30 Blyth Public School senior girls’ volleyball team came home as the 2002-2003 Central Huron Volleyball Girls’ Champions from this year’s tournament at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton. Participating teams were Huron Centennial. Seaforth, Clinton, Hullett, and Blyth. Blyth’s first match was against Seaforth. They won their first two games, 15-1 and 15-3. With boosted confidence, the Blyth girls’ second match was against Huron Centennial where they were again on top, scoring 15-4 and 15-8. The third match was against Hullett, where the girls’ took a blow, losing the first game. They got ready for the second game and won it 15- 11. Tensions hit a high before the third and final game against Hullett. Time was running out and the final score would only go to 10 instead of 15. Losing was not an option for the girls and the Blyth Bears pulled together as a winning team, ending the match 10-6 Blyth. With three wins behind them, Blyth girls ended their day against Clinton, the girls scoring 15-7 and 15-9. The girls were training since November for the tournament and are very proud of their effort and team spirit. Coaches were Sydney Elder and Laurie Sparling.
