A NOTE FROM BETTY

Well Mother Nature was having a
good time again this week. Havoc
was evident in many areas of our
lives as visibility decreased on the
roads and drifts became more of a
concern. Meetings, sports events and
all gatherings were announced as
cancelled as traffic on the roads and
on foot came to a halt. There was one
exception. The Afternoon Unit of the
United Church Women, always a
pretty tenacious, close-knit crew
decided that they could handle a
little snow. Thirteen of these tough
Mamas gathered to do their work for
the church and for their well being.
Way to go ladies. You’re a tough act
to follow but we’ll continue to try.
When you’re in the 5Rs be sure to
introduce yourself to our new
employee - Jody Todtz. Jody is
getting used to the workings of the
store so to make the transition a
little easier let her know she’s a
welcome addition as you introduce
her to the natives of the community.
Joan is quite relieved to have a
partner to share the work. Welcome
Jody.
I’ve just found the best winter
workout. It could be called the
30 proposals in for trust fund use
By David Blaney
Special to The Citizen
The committee established to
administer the Brussels Trust Fund
has received nearly 30 proposals or
suggestions for projects. The fund,
which was established from money
received from the sale of the former
Brussels PUC, currently contains
nearly $545,000.
The committee has been formally
organized as a legal trust and is
composed of Chair Ralph Watson,
Cathrine Campbell, Keith Mulvey,
Henry Excel, Doug Sholdice and
Brussels Councillors Joe Seili and
Greg Wilson.
Campbell said that the committee
has established the principle that
they want the fund to be involved in
things that are not the responsibility
of the municipality or the county.
With this in mind proposals of this
type were forwarded on to the proper
level of government.
“We want to concentrate on ideas
that will have a long-term benefit to
Brussels,” said Campbell. “We are
going slowly and looking to provide
assistance to help establish
worthwhile projects.”
The committee’s first official
project will be a scholarship to be
j resented annually to a student who
griduated from Brussels Public
School and went on to F.E. Madill.
The award will be made to a student
who is pursuing a career in the
skilled trades.
This year two awards are going to
be made because of the double
cohort graduating in June. In the
future only one scholarship will be
given each year.
Doug Sholdice is currently
discussing the idea of a virtual
museum for Brussels with various
community members. If the project
is given the green light it would see
the village’s history recorded on
computer and the development of a
web page devoted to Brussels’
stories and pictures.
The committee is also examining
the feasibility of turning the site of
the former municipal building into a
park and is gathering information
about the possibility of a local
skateboarding venue. There have
also been discussions about
replacing the sign by the
medical/dental building with a
modern electronic version.
Campbell emphasized that the
trust fund committee does not intend
to run projects by themselves. She
said that while they want to help
establish projects,
“We hope the long term oversight
will come from others in the
community.”
Grandmother exercises. You need a
couple of sturdy, as in not skinny,
granddaughters who require the
occasional or constant pick up and
carry. It’s a very good way to be
shown that your muscles are in need.
I’m not sure who had the better time
on the weekend - Chris and Lara or
Ralph and I. Jordan and Robyn
appear to have survived the antics of
the grandparents.
We’re into Valentine's week. It
really needs more than a day to
celebrate, so feel free to start
anytime now. Valentine’s Day is
such a welcome time in the middle
of winter so enjoy it with the
sweethearts in your life. Don’t be
'afraid to get mushy. It’s good for you
once in a while.
Enjoy the hearts and flowers that
come your way.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
