A new breed of researchers is finding out how our physical and social environments affect the fitness and lifestyle advice that health professionals provide ... ccording to Dr. Bob Reid, a behavioural scientist funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the typical questions to ask patients to assess the risk of heart disease and stroke aren't found in the standard medical textbooks. "How far do you live from a bicycle path or walking trail? Do you have a health-club membership? Do you own cross-country skis? Are your family and friends active? Do you like to do your physical activity alone or with others?" "Human behaviour is determined, to a significant degree, by people's social and physical environment. What our research tries to do is to identify important environmental determinants and different lifestyle behaviours like physical activity, smoking and healthy eating. We have to consider where people live, who they spend their time with, what they feel comfortable with, the image they want to present to others. That is our environment, and it plays a huge role in motivating people to live heart-healthy lives." He often cites one example of an environmental effect on heart-healthy behaviour. He turns to a study he carried out on factors that lead people to stop smoking. "We found that smoking is no longer socially acceptable and this is the biggest single factor motivating people to quit. A lot of behaviour is determined by putting people in the right environment where they get support to lead a healthier lifestyle, says Dr. Reid.
