(Bonnie Gropp photo) Group committee makes plans Balcony View Festival image The 1st Blyth Group Committee met at the Blyth Public School, Jan. 27 to make plans for Scout-Guide Week, Feb. 16-23. This year the family banquet will be held Feb. 19 at the Blyth arena. Trinity Anglican Church will host Scouting and Guiding members and their families for the morning church service, Sunday, Feb. 23. The meeting was also an opportu nity to update program activities of the sections. For January, a sport ing and games theme provided an opportunity to enjoy an evening of tobogganing outdoors, and board games indoors. For February, the emphasis will be on environmental issues. Thanks to the generosity of one parent, the Beavers will assemble bird feeders and play a recycling game. Also, on Feb. 15, all Beavers are invited to participate in Beaver Birr at St. Boniface School in Zurich. They will enjoy a day of games and crafts with Beavers from many other groups. On Feb. 25, they will enjoy an ani mal hunt outdoors. Since Christmas, the Cubs have been very busy. They enjoyed a fun evening of tobogganing, hot choco late and camping Jan. 25-26, at the Londesboro Hall. With the help of many parent vol unteers, this was an opportunity for winter games, lots of craft activities, and each Cub began work on their own perfect racing Kub Kar machine in preparation for the upcoming Kub Kar races. After test ing their creations locally, they will participate in the area Kub Kar Rally in Exeter, March 1. The Cubs have also been working on the Tawny Star requirements. Sherry Rowe attended one meeting to demonstrate and teach some basic sign language. Gary Caldwell prepared a toolbox craft for each of the Cubs and helped them assemble them on another night. Future projects include making a Wolf Cub Woggle and a demonstra tion of model air planes by Steve Delisle. Because of the large enrollment, the pack is also in need of more tents for camping in the spring. Efforts will be made to find funding. Scouts are working on two differ ent seasonal activities. Before Christmas they went swim ming at the Vanastra Pool. After Christmas they enjoyed an evening of tobogganing. Each Scout has now begun work on a canoe paddle for the spring. They are also planning a winter camp for Feb. 7-9. Venturers are getting their home made aircraft closer to completion. Currently, they are painting it and looking forward to getting it in the air. This has been a team effort that has extended over two years. They are also working on the chal lenge to produce a motorized bfty- cle. The Blyth Festival has announced the winner of its search for this sea son’s image. The winning painting, by Barry Richman of Grand Bend, is titled Balcony View. The pastel was inspired by chairs overlooking the Ausable River near the artist’s home. Richman’s work was one of 75 submissions from Ontario artists that ranged from pencil crayon to experimental photography. “This painting captures perfectly the balance between the landscape and the theatre,” says Blyth Festival Artistic Director Eric Coates. “There’s a sense of community, anticipation and reflection. Theatre relies on all three.” Five representatives from differ ent areas of the arts were part of a jury to select this season’s image. The season image will appear on the 29th season commemorative poster, as well as the season brochure and house program. Richman’s work is showcased in the River Road Artists’ Co-op Gallery in Grand Bend. His works prominently feature landscapes, rivers, lakes and shoreline themes. He believes that first impressions in nature are everything.
