(Bonnie Gropp photo) AMDSB trustee distribution may change before election By Stew Slater Special to the Citizen The distribution of school board trustees in Huron County is quite likely to change prior to next November’s municipal elections, and the Avon Maitland District School Board is preparing itself to host special meetings to allow public input on the issue. But Director of Education Lome Rachlis doesn’t expect contro versy. At a regular Avon Maitland meeting Tuesday, Jan. 28, trustees were advised by chair Meg Westley that Rachlis would be delivering a report on possible redistribution in early February. She went on to explain that any decisions on changes must be communicated to the provincial government by March 31, and that the board may need to host special public input meetings prior to that date. Interviewed after the Jan. 28 meeting, Rachlis explained that the changes relate mainly to the Huron East briefs 2 employees get raise After discussion on the salary grid for Huron East employees, council agreed to increase the treasurer finance manager’s salary from $25.42 to $29.71 per hour and the assistant day care supervisor’s from $16.77 to $17.12. *** A request for financial support for the Maitland Bank Cemetery was deferred until budget talks. *** FARM SAFETY FACT Did you know? In Perth County, re-organization occurred before the 1998 amalgamation of the former Perth and Huron boards of education, so creators of the resulting Avon Maitland board were able to organize Perth County’s five trustees according to the new boundaries. In Huron County, however, municipal re-organization didn’t take place until just prior to the most recent municipal elections, in the fall of 2000, so the regions served by Huron’s four trustees were based on old municipal boundaries. “The board, at that time, said it would retain the present distribution in Huron County through this group of trustees, but would look at changing it to come in line with the municipal re-organization, and invite the public to have its say,” Rachlis explained. That time has come, with the government’s deadline of March 31. A proposal from American Water Services for the preparation of a water supply master plan and environmental assessment report for Seaforth was approved for an estimated cost of $46,275 plus taxes. The report is to be completed by May 31. *** The quote from Explosive & Chemical Technologies for the removal of the old water tower in To aid in that process, the government has sent statistics to the board about the voting population and its distribution within the region. Rachlis says changes could potentially go so far as altering the number of trustees, or changing the present proportion of representation for Huron and Perth. But he suggests such alterations are unlikely to happen, since the population has remained relatively stable, both in terms of number and distribution. Still, he says the board wants the process to be as open as possible, and that’s why they’re making allowance for the possibility for public meetings. Every public suggestion will not be incorporated into the changes, Rachlis says. The provincial government will ultimately have more influence than anyone else. “A lot of it is set out in the provincial legislation,” the director of education commented. “The board is really constrained as to what it can do, but there may be some minor maneuvering.
