Agriculture_____ Brussels Livestock report Martin limousin heifer sells for $122.25 Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Jan. 31 were 2,645 head of cattle, 521 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers sold.- $5 lower while the cows traded $2 higher. On Thursday the veal sold at prices $1 to $2 lower. The lambs also sold on a market that was $2 to $5 lower. On Friday all weights and classes of Stockers sold on a strong active trade. There were 357 steers on offer selling from $ 108 to $ 111 with sales to $128.75. Graeme MacDonald, Brussels, consigned one pied steer weighing 1,245 lbs. which sold to Norwich Packers for $128.75. His overall consignment of two steers averaged 1,320 lbs. for an average price of $121.48. Two steers consigned by Amos B. Weber, Wroxeter, averaged 1,321 lbs. selling for an average of $114.82 with one limousin steer weighing 1,440 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $123. Two heifers consigned by David Bowles, Brussels, averaged 1,478 lbs. selling for an average of $112.83 with his top red wf heifer weighing 1,245 lbs. selling to Moyer Packing Co. for $112.50. Andrew Martin, Chesley, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,395 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $119.75. His OMAF extends Healthy Futures Healthy Futures for Huron Agriculture, a grant program to improve water quality, has been extended to the end of 2003. Huron County and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) are helping rural landowners address specific water quality concerns by providing grants to share the cost of selected best management practices that improve water quality. Maitland Valley and Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authorities are delivering the program with Huron County. Huron’s program has been one of the most successful in the province with the project review committee approving 650 projects and nearly $2 million in grants since the program began in 2001. Another $400,000 is still available. All grants are at a 50 per cent grant rate and each category has a grant maximum. Eligible projects include: • liquid manure spreading equipment modifications to reduce runoff and tile drain contamination; • berms and eavestroughs to divert clean water from manure and exercise yards; FARM SAFETY FACT Did you know? Martin, Wingham, consigned one limousin heifer weighing 1,245 lbs. which sold to Norwich Packers for • nutrient management plans not required for building permits; • fences, crossings and watering devices to eliminate cattle access to watercourses; • fertilizer, chemical and fuel handling and storage; • cropland plans to reduce soil erosion; • grassed waterways, catch basins, terraces and berms to reduce erosion of agricultural land; • retiring fragile farmland with trees, vegetation and buffer strips; • milkhouse washwater treatment systems; • pitless adapter caps, grading, sealing and upgrading well casings; and properly decommissioning abandoned wells. Darren Johnston, Bluevale, consigned one gold heifer weighing 1,250 lbs. which sold to Highland Packers Ltd. for $120. His overall offering of nine heifers averaged 1,214 lbs. selling for an average of $111.51. Five heifers consigned by Decroft Farms Ltd., Clinton, averaged 1,475 lbs. selling for an average of $110.73 with their top two gold heifers averaging 1.430 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $110.73. Walter Riddell, Granton, consigned fifteen heifers averaging 1,204 lbs. selling for an average of $110.48 with his top black heifer conservation authority as soon as possible because projects are funded on a first-come, first-served basis. People who have already received grants are welcome to apply for additional projects. Funding for this project comes from OMAF, Huron County and grant recipients. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) also has rural well upgrading and decommissioning grants through Healthy Futures for Ontario Agriculture. OFA grant rates cover 67 per cent of the costs for well upgrades and 64 per cent of well decommissioning costs.
