(Vicky Bremner photo) win playoff openerBantams The Brussels Bantams began their best-of-five series against Zurich last week, taking the opener on Wednesday. Adam McClure got the puck to Greg Bowers midway through the first period to open the scoring. Matt McClinchey notched the first of his hattrick in the dying minutes of the period then watched as Zurich Blyth PeeWees playoff against Wallace squad The BTyth PeeWees continued their best-of-five series against Wallace, Jan. 20. After winning the first match-up 3-0, the team had a more difficult contest in game two. Wallace scored twice in the first period and in spite of a second period goal from Derek Youngblut, the team could not rally for the win. Tony Bean earned an assist. The squad travelled to Wallace, Jan. 26, and were again defeated by a strong defence. After giving up three goals to their opponent, Blyth managed only one of their own in the final minute of Blyth Mites pull off 3-2 win over Wingham Blyth Mites pulled off a 3-2 win over the Wingham Mites. Scoring first was Wingham's Cole McKee, assisted by Trent Michie and Brody Hunt. Wingham’s second goal was scored by Trent Michie, assisted by Austin Gibson and Brody beat the Brussels netminder with seven seconds on the clock. Matt White and Cory Chapman earned assists. McClinchey proceeded to put two more past the goalie and Steven Ropp topped off the scoring on an empty netter late in the third for a 5- 1 final. Brad McKague, White and Jordan play. The goal was scored by Curtis Robertson. The following night, Blyth was in desperate need of a win as they faced elimination from the OMHA playoffs. Wallace against struck early, putting two in the net in the opening frame then adding one early in the second and third. Down 4-0, Blyth broke the shut­ out when Robertson picked up a pass from John McDowell for Blyth’s lone goal. The squad will now wait for group playoffs. Hunt. Blyth’s goals were scored by Connor Rodger, Ryan Plunkett and Ashley Higgins. Assists went to Autumn Wightman, Higgins, Dylan Bromley, Hunter Dale, Curtis Raynard and Ron Vercruyssen. Campbell assisted on the plays. The result was much different when the squads met Jan. 31. Zurich came out firing, scoring two before Brussels broke onto the board off a goal from McKague. McClinchey assisted. The home team racked up one in the second and Brussels drew closer early in the third when McKague netted his second of the contest. In spite of a goal by Ropp, with Andrew McDonald helping out, Brussels could only manage three goals to Zurich’s six. Looking to retake command of the series in the third game, Brussels netminder C.J Ashley made outstanding saves to keep their opponent off the board. Though Brussels too was held scoreless through the first two periods, they opened up in the third with goals from McClure, Chris Jutzi and McClinchey to take the 3- 0 win. The Bulldogs hosted the first game and picked up an 11-5 win. Micah Loder scored three times for the Dogs, Joel Riley added two and singles went to Darrin Austin, Chris Bernard, Cole Stewart, Kirk Stewart, Neil Salverda and Mike Bean. Assists went to Austin, three; C. Stewart, three; Loder, two; K. Stewart, two; T.J. Marks, Riley, M. Bean, Tyler Kernighan and Brett Bean. The Bulldogs travelled to Ayton for game two and swept the series with a 7-2 victory. Cody Anderson and Riley each scored twice and C. Stewart, Loder and Austin notched singles. Picking up assists were K. Stewart, three; C. Stewart, Kernighan and Anderson. Travis Shelton and Jeff Elliott combined goaltending duties for the dogs. The Bulldogs then moved on to to meet Wallace in the WOAA semi­ final. The best of five series opened in Blyth Jan. 27. The Bulldogs opened a 3-0 lead after two periods and went on to a 5- 1 victory. Loder scored the hattrick with C. Stewart and K. Stewart adding singles. Assists went to Austin, two; M. Bean, two; Loder, Kernighan and Bernard. Shelton played a solid game in the Blyth cage. Game two of the series moved to Kurtzville Friday, Jan. 21. The Bulldogs scored the first goal, but Wallace came back to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. The game remained tied and-the teams headed to overtime. One minute into sudden death, K. Stewart finished off a nifty passing play from Riley and C. Stewart to give the Dogs a 4-3 victory. B. Bean scored Blyth’s first goal with the assist going to Nate Witherspoon. Shelton was again solid in the Blyth net. Blyth returned to Kurtzville for game three. Riley scored Blyth’s first goal on a penalty shot early in the game, however the Dogs again fell behind, trailing 4-1 after two periods. The team got goals from K. Stewart, C. Stewart and Riley to tie the game after regulation time. A 10-minute overtime period proved nothing, as each team picked up a point. Blyth now leads the series five points to one point with game four in Blyth Monday night. Crusaders play Elora The Brussels Crusaders begin their playoff drive Friday night as they travel to Elora. The Crusaders will play Elora in the best of seven series in the A division of the WOAA senior hockey playoffs. At the league all-star game this past weekend in Shelburne, the Crusaders were represented by Corey Campbell and Brett Fischer. Both players earned assists in the contest and were on the winning South division team which defeated the North 10-8. Anyone interested in volunteering Please call Graham @527-1272
