year. Perhaps the most well known is
the singing-of Christmas carols. Ever
wonder just how these special songs
came to be?
According to music historians,
there are different theories. The
major one involves St. Francis of
Assisi, who is credited with
attempting to renew the common
person's faith in God 1,200 years
after Christ's birth.
On Christmas Eve, St. Francis is
said to have led a group of monks in
song to honour this important event.'
The style of these songs was joyous
and uplifting, similar to the minstrel
music, a very popular form of
entertainment with the commoners.
As a result, the songs sang by the
monks became very popular with the
public.
Soon after St. Francis initiated the
use of joyous song to celebrate
Christmas, many German carols
were written. Perhaps -the most
famous of all, Silent Night, (Stine
Nacht) was written by an Austrian
pastor. The Christmas carol remains
today a- very important part of the
Christmas tradition in Germany,
especially for children. On Jan. 6,
German boys dress up and sing
Christmas carols to celebrate the end
of Christmas and the visit of the
three kings to Christ.
