N. Huron approves change to committees By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor North Huron council at its Dec. 1 meeting passed a recommendation from the committee of the whole regarding changes to the committee structure. The proposal is for four main committees: public works, economic development, which would include transportation services, water, sewers, landfills, garbage collection, recycling and cemeteries issues; agriculture and long-range planning (economic development, nutrient management plans, municipal drains, farm tile drainage, building inspection, secondary plans, zoning bylaws, minor variances, severances, long-range planning); recreation and facilities (municipal buildings including arenas, community centres, municipal By Janice Becker Citizen staff With few exception. this Christmas appears to be off to a slow start at businesses in Brussels and Blyth. In spite of having a special sale on last week, Darlene Oldfield of Oldfield's Pro Hardware and Radio Shack, said things have been slower than expected. "There have been some busy periods," she said, but then quiet ones. At Country Tyme Portraits, also in Thieves On Nov. 16 two reports came into OPP of break-ins in the McKillop/Grey Wards of Huron East. Someone had forced open the door to the barn also on the Krauter Line property. Once insid $700 worth of assorted tools and barn-related equipment was stolen. Half .,,an hour later officers were called to a Winthrop Road residence. office, airport, recreation programs, parks and green space) and health, social and cultural (day care, museums, theatres, libraries, hospitals, Wheels Away, health and safety, 9-1-1, emergency plans). In presenting the repott to council at the committee of the • whole meeting, Clerk-Administrator John Stewart mentioned concerns being encountered in recreation with regards to the Blyth arena. These include admininstration, booking ice time, signage, contracts, concession booth, etc. He therefore mentioned that council might want to consider a different recreation committee system and suggested three options. Monday night, council approved the second option, a committee of volunteers for each arena (Wingham, Blyth, Belgrave), which would meet Brussels, Lori Coultes agrees that sales have been slow, but hopes that things will pick up in a week or so. Shopping for the men in the family must also occur later in the season as Merilyn McDonald of McDonald Home Hardware and Lumber says there has been no surge yet. "Some decorations have gone," she says, "but we usually see more (sales) closer to Christmas." While Jason Rehkopf, owner of Brussels Knechtals Village Market said 'business is a little better than last year, Luann's Country Flowers is seeing booming trade. A person entered the unlocked home and stole $3,900 worth of property: a Remington semi-automatic and a .22 calibre Hornet rifle with a scope attached, a cross bow, JVC stereo system with tower speakers, a DeWalt four pack sawzall, drill, flashlight and skill saw. Anyone who can help solve these crimes call the OPP or Crime Stoppers at I -800-222-8477(TIPS). regularly then forward concerns to the recreation and facilities committee. Three councillors and the reeve will sit on each of these four committees. Stewart told council he hoped the new structure would eventually allow for the elimination of the monthly committee of the whole, meeting as well as some of the smaller committees such as North Huron and area economic development committee, Wingham and District Hospital board, North Huron and District Museum board. Wingham municipal airport commission, Blyth-Hullett landfill site board, Bluewater Recycling, Wingham Heritage Theatre and Blyth business association. There are also five committees which require representation of council: North Huron Police "We have been very busy and we are very pleased with the response," said owner Luann Taylor. "People have learned they have to shop early if they want the best selection." Taylor expects business to stay brisk right through Christmas. Nan Gore of Gore's Home Hardware in Blyth says sales have been steady in the last couple weeks with people shopping for lights and Christmas tree ornaments. Several retailers also noted that many shoppers are going to the city early in the season because the weather had been relatively good and may make more purchases close to home as the date nears. Services board, Wingham and Area Fire board, Blyth District Fire Area board, Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and Westario Power Corporation. At the committee of the whole the possibility . of eliminating the economic development meeting was suggested. There was also questioning as to whether .there was a need for council representation on the hospital board. take rifles For most local merchants Christmas off to slow start Famous Christmas Store Come & See Our New Exciting Selection of Christmas Gifts For Best Selection - Shop Early YOU'RE BUSY — RELAX OUR FRIENDLY STAFF WILL GIFT WRAP IT FREE FOR You Send a one year subscription for The Citizen to: Name Address City Prey.
