Cold, snowy weather made enjoying the annual Brussels
Santa Claus parade a bit chilly, but these youngsters from
Walton's Little School were dressed for the occasion.

PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
By Jo-Ann
McDonald
Call

Walton celebrated lots of birthdays
this past week.
A surprise party for Pat Gillis
started the week. John and the boys
had family and friends of Pat's show
up for a social evening of cards and
visiting much to her shock.
The Walton Inn hosted Joan
Tuchlinsky for her birthday
luncheon as well as Jo-Ann
McDonald and friends for hers.
A new face at the Walton Inn is
Cory Walsh who is also going to be
a part-time waitress and is also
moving to Walton. Welcome to her.
We also welcome the Halerwich-
Clark family to the village. They
moved to the former Dietz home.
Doug Fraser underwent eye
surgery this past week and we hope
all went well. He's home and
behaving, I hear.
The Grey Bruce Singers put on a
wonderful Home for Christmas
show
that was attended by many local
people. The show was at the
Hanover Civic Theatre from Nov. 28
- Dec. I. Attending on Thursday
evening were Marilyn McDonald,
Audrey Cardiff, Jane Hall and Jo-
Ann McDonald. Saturday evening
Barry and Pam Gordon, Karin
McDonald and Ken and Gail Moffatt
attended. Bruce Mcdonald, son of
Marilyn, is in the choir.
There were many local people on
the bus to Toronto on Sunday to see
Mama Mia, including Lois McCall
and Marilyn McDonald.
A reminder to all, it's deer hunting
again this week, so be aware at dusk
and dawn, for those skittish deer.
Chris Lee and Jamie Emmrich
attended' the motocross at the
London Motoplex on Saturday. Over
200 riders were on hand for the day's
races.
Budget miscalculations
lead to policy change
By Keith Roulston
Citizen publisher
financial matters are being
discussed and that a department's
budget could not go forward for
council approval until the finance
department has signed off on
it.
In future, all Huron County
departments must have their budgets
approved by the , county finance
department before going to council,
a new policy adopted by county
' council.
The change in policy results from
an error in the highways department
budget that proposed the 2002
construction budget of $4.7 million
be met with a transfer of $3 million
from the highways reserve. But at
the beginning of the year there was
only $1.1 million in the highways
reserve.
The error was picked up when the
treasurer reviewed the department's
financial statements for the first nine
months of the year when the
highways reserve was found to be in
a deficit of $2.2 million.The deficit
will be covered by a transfer from
the county's reserve for
contingencies, a general reserve
fund covering all county oper-
ations.
Councillors went into a closed
session at their Nov. 19 committee
of the whole meeting.
In papers presented to that
meeting it was noted that the
treasurer had in the past often not
been included in the preparation of
department budgets.
It was recommended that in future
the treasurer ora representative be at
all committee meetings where
