Bridges' Ritchie gets 'Rural' award By David Blaney Special to The Citizen At the Nov. 12 council meeting of Huron East, councillors were once again reminded of how difficult it is to integrate the policies of five municipalities into one. This time the subject was as simple as the fall leaf pick up that has been enjoyed by the residents of the previous municipalities of Seaforth affd•Brussels. Public Works Co-ordinator John Forrest reported to council that requests for pick up had been received from residents outside these traditional areas. He asked for some direction from -council about the possibility of expanding the area covered by the current policy. In his report to council Forrest noted that the leaf vacuuming service is offered on a continuous rotation in Seaforth, on a one-time per year basis in Brussels and in the spring and fall by special pick up of bagged leaves and-garden refuse in Vanastra. He also noted that the service is provided by municipal employees in Seaforth and under a private contract in Brussels. Councillors inquired if it would be possible to extend the service in either form to the areas of Harpurhey and Egmondville where the added requests had originated. Forrest replied that it was probably not possible to use the current municipal equipment. He said, "It (the leaf vacuum) is not a high maintenance piece of equipment. However it is a question of travel time." Further questioning by councillors revealed that the private contractor used in Brussels had indicated he would not be able to expand his service. Tuckersmith Ward Councillor Bill DeJong commented, "I don't think it is fair to offer a _service to Seaforth and not Harpurhey and Egmondville." -Mayor Lin Stealer agreed saying. "We are all one municipality and I think we should extend the service. Steffler also noted a practical side to extending the service. "There is a benefit to having it done. It leaves the grates and catch basins free." Councillor Joe Sieli noted that the pick up was later in Brussels this year due to the fact the leaves had remained on the trees longer than normal but agreed with Councillor Greg Wilson who said, "I believe it (leaf pick up) is working well in our area." After further discussion a motion By Stew Slater Special to The Citizen Ron Ritchie, co-ordinator of the innovative- Bridges to Agriculture program, received an award from the Foundation for Rural Living on Oct. 29, at an annual conference about rural development in Alliston. Bridges to Agriculture was a shared initiative between the Avon Maitland and Huron-Perth Catholic school boards. It provided a unique chance for high school students to study topics related to agriculture in the classroom and on field trips, and also to spend time working at agriculture or agriculture-related jobs. Start-up costs for the program were paid by a three-year government grant, but as of this year the school boards now have no money to operate it on a district- wide basis. Now, it's up to individual high schools to fund their own Bridges to Agriculture-inspired programs. Ritchie, who worked out of the Avon Maitland board's Seaforth offices, is now acting vice principal at Exeter Public School. Word of his award was brought by South Huron trustee Randy Wagler during the
