concert of festive music
Children's lives
The Carousel Players, students from F.E. Madill
Secondary School, performed Nobody's Children for Blyth
and Brussels Grade 3-6 students at Brussels Public
School, Monday morning. The play told the tale of the
Barnardo Children, orphaned and abandoned children
from Great Britain who were sent to Canada in the late
1800s. The pupils learned about the children's lives in
Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba as they tried to fit into their
new homes. Jacquie Falconer, left, of Blyth, portrayed 13-
year-old Kathleen Griffin, sent to a Mennonite farm on The
Prairies. (Janice Becker photo)

The Blyth Festival Singers will
share the music of the Christmas
season in concert on Sunday, Dec. 8
at Knox Presbyterian Church in
Goderich, 2:30 p.m.,
The concert — For Us A Child is
Born — will feature traditional and
contemporary music — from the
sounds of Bach to sleigh bells, and
will include special guests the Knox
Handbell Choir and organist Doug
Squire of Goderich.
The concert will feature the 55-
voice choir under the director of
conductor Robert Blackwell, with
pianist Sharon Johnston.
The concert will include sacred to
secular Christmas music, from the
Renaissance to the 20th century,
including Canadian works. The fea-
tured work is J.S. Bach's Cantata
no. 142 — For Us A Child is Born,
for choir and soloists.
Other favourite selections include
John Rutter's' Twelve Days of
Christmas, and the popular Sleigh
Ride. As well, the choir will join
with the Knox Handbell Choir to
perform two impressive pieces. The
handbell choir will also perform
alone.
There will be opportunities for the
audience to sing familiar carols and
everyone is invited to attend a recep-
tion after the concert to enjoy hot
cider and homemade Christmas
sweets.
On Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. the Blyth
Festival Theatre invites everyone to
celebrate Christmas early with a pro-
duction of The Nutcracker by Ballet
Jorgen.
Founded in 1987 Ballet Jorgen has
toured throughout North America.
The Globe and Mail describes their
performance of The Nutcracker as
"rich, innovative and dizzying in its
variety".
In 1996 and 1998 the company
was honoured with the Lieutenant
Governor's Award for the Arts.
Attending The Nutcracker is a
Canadian holiday tradition, and has
served generations of children and
adults alike as an introduction to the
magical and beautiful world of bal-
let.
