Storytellers of old held memories of people
By Rev. Ethel Miner Clare,
Knox United Church, Belgrave
"Long ago" the storyteller would
begin and the world would. hush
holding its breath to listen. The.voice
of the storyteller wove patterns of
light.. remembering yesterday and
promising tomorrow.
For in ancient days storytellers
held the memories of their people.
As the camp fire flickered and the
spell of the story was woven, the
people, would come to know who
they were. In word and in ritual -
through story - the people knew their
traditions, their history and their
belief.
Stories reminded people from
where they came: stories lit the way
into the future with hope.''
That description of story, from Tex
Sample a minister in Missouri,
reminds me Of the story of Joshua.
Joshua began his leadership of the
Israelite people after the death of
Moses and was the leader who
brought the Hebrew people into the
Promised Land.
On entering the Promised Land,
the Israelites encountered the
religions and gods of the peoples
they conquered. Moreover; for many
within the tribes of Israel, these
'foreign' religions and gods were
part of their own ancestral heritage.
However, as long as people were
alive who had lived through the trials
of the Exodus, who had experienced
the miracles and deliverance that
God had performed for them, the
Israelites stayed faithful to God.
But the time came , when the
conquest of the land was complete
and the Israelites were attracted to
the religious practices of their new
neighbours.
Who were these other gods?
Marduk of the ASsyrians and Baal of
the Canaanites are two possibilities:
Marduk the god who promised to
create and redeem the world through
violence. and Baal the god of
fertility and abundance, served
through_ human sacrifice were
worshipped.
To offset this, Joshua assembled
all the tribes of Israel at Schechem,
an ancient sacred site where
Abraham and Jacob had worshipped
and where Joseph was buried. There
Joshua addressed the tribes of
Israel.
He recounted once again the
stories of God's faithfulness - stories
which involved Abraham, Isaac.
Jacob. Moses and Aaron and recent
battles. After retelling these faith
stories, Joshua then challenged the
Israelites with the words "Choose
this day whom you will serve." The
people responded, "The Lord our
God we will serve and obey."
(Joshua 15, 24)
Those ancient gods never die and
we. too, are often tempted to follow
their ways - to seek security through

violence, war, and pre-emptive
strikes: to sacrifice the poor, the
Third World, and others for our own
abundance.
How, do we respond to Joshua's
challenge, "Choose this day who you
will serve"'? What faith stories guide
us into the future? Have we shared
those'stories with our children? The
stories of the awesome God who
created, redeemed, and sustains us,
do indeed light the way into the
future and remind us who we are as
a people of God.
