The Huron County Health Unit
and Safety First Huron Perth —

to celebrate Drug Awareness Week,
Nov. 17-23. Throughout the week,
Julian Madigan will be travelling

5,000 students in Huron's high
schools.
There will also be an afternoon
workshop on Nov. 20 targeted to
parents. educators, guidance
counsellors, child and youth workers

Madigan's message reminds that

associated with overuse of alcohol.
marijuana and medications, and it is
not just the so.-called "hard" drugs
that cause problems.
Madigan is the number one best-
selling author of The Agony of
Erstacr. He is a triathlete. seminar
leader and coach.
Madigan shares his emotionally-
charged story , about how he turned
his life around, without use of jaded
statistics, or the ineffective message-
of 'just say no to drugs'. Madigan
will provide participants with a
clear, concise, accurate and factual
overview of drugs and the drug
culture by sharing experiences,
accumulated knowledge, and case
histories.
Drug -Awareness Week is
reminding people across Ontario that
it's not "just alcohol", or "just
marijuana" or "just medication", that
heavy drinking, marijuana use and
medications can cause serious
problems in today's society.
Pat Sanagan, co-ordinator of the
Ontario. Drug Awareness
Partnership, said "Most people use
one or more of these substances,-
which can cause problems like
alcohol poisoning. injuries and
hospital admissions for treatment.
Marijuana, heavy dri nking and
medication use can have more
problems associated w ith them than
the 'hard' drugs."
In a recently survey, 40.7 per cent
of Grade 11 students reported
drinking to the point of becoming ill
in the four weeks prior to the
Marijuana has been identified as the
number one substance by callers
seeking treatment for drug problems.
Adverse drug reactions cause ten per
cent of all hospital admissions and
25 per cent of admissions. ,in the
elderly population.
The .drug awareness session
geared to adults provides
participants with an overview of the
current drug scene, the types of
drugs available and how these drugs
are being used, as well as
information from counsellors and
leading drug experts.
Madigan will take participants on
a journey through the various drug
categories, correct the
misinformation that currently exists
about various drugs and will include
the most effective methods of
educating young people about the
dangers of drugs...
"Youth -across Huron are going to
hear a very strong and powerful
message", says Erica Arnett, Huron
County Health Unit. "The afterhoon
session will teach parents and
professionals, how to talk to teens
about drug use and abuse. Any
form of talking is better than no
talking."
Do not miss this opportunity to
take part in this free seminar on Nov.
20 at the Clinton Town Hall —from
