At the Branch
Auxiliary discusses upcoming banquets
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Brussels Legion Ladies Auxiliary
discussed the upcoming banquets for
the month.
They had a team going to District
euchre in Hanover on Saturday:
Helen Dobson, Carol Thornton,
Lillian Moses and Isabel Alcock.
They returned having had a good day
and good fun, but will not advance.
On Wednesday ...morning the
Branch hosted the Grade 6 classes
from Brussels Public School and
Grey Central Public School. They
had a chance to visit with the
veterans. other members of the
Legion and a Cadet leader. There
were seven different stations and
small groups of the children moved
throtigh all the stations to spend time
talking to the different leaders.
Taking part were Bill Bremner and
Charlie Procter, air force; Alf Sutton,
Lyle Brothers, Ross Bennett. Forrest
Whittard, army: Cecil Moore, navy;
Glenn Bridge, reserve and. war
artifacts; George Adams and Donald
Dunbar, militia; when 1 was 10;
Cadet Corp - Elizabeth Cam Sandra
Josling and Jo-Ann McDonald,
Poster. Essay and Poems and the
Legion today. The children were well
prepared for their visit and had
questions ready for the veterans.
The children enjoyed juice and
cookies prepared by Barb Dunbar
and Grace Procter. The veterans had
lunch prepared by the ladies, then
relaxed and reminisced. This is a
_wonderful opportunity to bring the
two age groups together and for the
children to hear firsthand about the
war.
The Saturday afternoon euchre saw
nine tables at play. Lucky winners
were Delores Howatt and Hazel Reid
with 79 'points. The second place
winners were Carman and Ila
Pollock. 72 points, and third place
with 70 points was Isabelle Gray and
Mac Smith. The lucky lone hand
winners were Stuart Chamney and
Rita Flynn.
The Sunday night singles dance
had a good crowd enjoy the music of
the Blue Diamond Trio.
We are looking for a person to
become involved on the sports
committee. Call Gary Dauphin if that
could be you.
This is the last month to pay
membership dues at the early bird
price of $40. After Dec. 1, the price
will be $45.
We are trying to achieve 90 per
cent paid membership before Dec. 1,
so drop into the Branch soon or send
it in.
The month of October's early bird
winner for her 2004 dues was Greta
Zehr.
Doreen Rutledge is in Seaforth
hospital, and Irma Brighton is at
Braemar in Wingham. Comrade
David Goebel is still mending his
broken leg but hopes to be around
soon. Comrade Eric Ross is also
recovering from knee surgery and is
coming along nicely.
Poppy chairman, Comrade Linda
Bird was busy getting the wreaths
organized for the Remembrance Day
services as well as the poppy
campaign.
Remembrance Day services were
held on Monday, Nov. I I beginning
at 10:30 a.m. President Comrade
Rick McDonald conducted the
service assisted by Padre Joan
Golden.
There were over 35 organizations
and individuals who placed wreaths
in memory of fallen comrades. The
placing of the poppies by comrades
and members of the community
preceded The Lust Post, the Two
Minutes of Silence and Reveille.
The service concluded with the
benediction by the Padre Golden.
. The church service followed at
Duff's United Church, Walton where
Joan Tuchlinsky led the worship. The
colour party, Legion and Auxiliary
members paraded from the parking
lot into the church.
Comrades of Branch 218 attended
at Huronlea at 2 p.m. to conduct a
Remembrance Service for the
residents.
The service was ,led by Joan
Golden.
Telling it like it was
Navy veteran Cecil Moore tells students from Brussels
Public School about his time in service during the war. The
young people visited the local Legion last Wednesday to
talk to and ask questions of army, air force and navy
veterans, as well as learn about the work of the Legion.
