Just when they thought they had

councillors have found out they'll
have to repeal the bylaw and draft a
new one in the new year.
The new bylaw had been passed
July 8 after several years of
consultations with the public and
woodlot industry. The repeal is
required because the new Municipal
Act comes into effect in January and
the Ministry of Natural Resources
may not approve the Huron bylaw
because the act changes some of the
provisions for municipal incisdiction

over woodlots, particularly about
which level of municipality controls
different sizes of woodlots.
As well, the ministry had already
sent the bylaw back with suggested
revisions.
Under the new act municipalities
will be able to issue stop-work
orders to those found violating
forestry bylaws and fines will be set
at $10,000, or $1,000 a tree for a
ffitt offence and a maximum of
$25,000 ($2,500 per tree) for
subsequent offences.
The forestry bylaw, revised to
take into effect the new Municipal
Act and comments of the ministry, is
expected to be passed in January or
February.
