The Brussels PeeWee Girls' season started off on Oct. 29 in Goderich with an evenly-matched game that resulted in a 5-2 loss. The first goal by Ashley Sholdice, scored from centre ice, was unassisted. Lindsay Watson popped in the second goal with an assist from Sholdice. Considering Goderich had been on the ice since early September and had four games already under their belt, the Brussels team performed well. On Nov. 2, the girls were on the road again to play Mitchell 2 only this time without their regular goalie: With a face-off won by Sholdice, Colleen Aitchison had no trouble at all scoring from the point. The Blyth Bantam Bulldogs opened their season Monday,. Oct. 21 in Lucknow. Lucknow came out hard — catching the Dogs_off guard scoring three quick goals. However, the dogs narrowed that margin to two with 3:40 to go in the opening frame. John Bokhout tapped the puck off the boards to Dickie Gregg, who in turn sent Darcey Cook in on a breakaway. Cook then fired a high wrist-shot by the Lucknow goalie. The Bulldogs came one step closer finding the net on ,the powerplay late in the second. Cook won the face- off, then using Bokhout as the decoy stepped around the defence and Cody Richmond took a pass from Drew Wood for the netter in the second. With the assistance of Carly- Whitfield, Richmond slid another past the Luck-now netminder. Blyth took a 3-0 lead when Connor Prescott put one in the net early in the third. However, Lucknow started a comeback less than a minute later. A goal from Richmond regained the three-goal lead, but Lucknow pulled the score to 4-2. With the Lucknow goalie on the bench for the last two minutes of play, the home team tallied one, but Blyth held on for the 4-3 victory. Goalie Kayla Black played a very strong game. The second goal was scored by team captain Chelsey McLellan with an assist to Bridget Blake. Halfway through the third, Mitchell received a lucky bounce off of goalie Trista Dietner's stick to result in a final score of 2-1 for Brussels. Wednesday, Nov. 6 was a special day for the PeeWees. With 27 people in tow they headed off to Kitchener to see the Canadian Women's hockey team take on team USA in the Four Nations Cup. With great seats, six rows off the ice in the Team Canada home end, the girls were thrilled to cheer on Canada to a 7-0 win. Coaches, parents and players, all agree the atmosphere was thrilling tucked the puck under the crossbar to notch his second of the night. Lucknow responded with three goals of their own to increase their lead to four. The Bulldogs came bounding back with one before the period ended. Trevor McArter and Bokhout sent Darcey Cook in alone on the Lucknow goalie. He fired the puck in to record 'his hattrick. Lucknow restored the four-goal margin early in the third. The Bulldogs came back on Cook's fourth of the night, set up by Bokhout and Nixon. Action was fast and furious at both ends of the ice with no scoring until the final minute when Lucknow scored with only 32 seconds remaining in the game. Not to be outdone, however Cook fired another one by with eight seconds left, after taking a great pass from Blake Hesselwood and Bokhout. Zach Horn and Joel Salverda did an excellent job in the Blyth cage. The final score was Lucknow 8, Blyth 5. The Blyth Bantams accepted and a good time was had-by all. Saturday, Nov. 9 the, girls played their home opener against Elma Logan. It was a fast game that kept Brussels goalie Brianne Wheeler busy making some wonderful saves.
