Grey Central Echo Students take part in Remembrance service At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. students and staff at Grey Central paused to honour and remember brave Canadians who went to war to preserve our peace. Classes entered the gym quietly to a piano and guitar prelude provided by Miss Hill and Mr. Payne. Uniformed Grade 8 cadets, Amber By Janice Becker Citizen staff The small community of Ethel may soon be attracting visitors from a great distance if the hopes of Mervin and Adeline Brubacher are fulfilled. The Brubachers opened Brubachers of Ethel earlier this month, a new restaurant for the village. They hope to follow the lead of Anna Mae's, a very popular restaurant which opened in Millbank a few years ago and features home cooking and a selection of baked goods. The couple will be doing their own baking with Adeline Brubacher overseeing the task as her husband learns the job. They will also have homemade breads, tarts, rolls and pastries with all the baked items Laidlaw, Krystle Ziegler. Heather Stewart, Krysta Richmond and Tamara Moser. formed the colour party, placing the flags at the front of the gym. Mrs. Murray's Grade 4/5s gave an a capella rendition of Poppies Red. Accompanied by his guitar, Mr. Park's Grade 2/3 class sang It Would Be a Wonderful World. Grade available to be purchased to take home. Aside from the restauran fare, visitors will be able to pick up items such as pop, chocolate bars and candy, said Mervin Brubacher. "The children need a place to go." "The (adults) need a place to gather, too," he added. As first-time restaurant owners, the Brubachers "hope to create -a whole different atmosphere" as they renovate and redecorate the old corner store which has seen many uses over the years. Walls have been moved and added, as well as being repainted and new flooring has been installed. The restaurant, which will seat approximately 35 people, will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday, to start, said Mervin Brubacher. Adjustments will be made as needed. 8 student Justin Hubbert recited John McCrae's In Flanders Fields. Miss Henry's Grade 7 class sang Day is Done, accompanied and directed by Mr. Payne. Two Minutes of Silence was observed, then a video of artwork by Mrs. Goodall's Grade I class was accompanied by What a Wonderful World. Miss VanBolhuis' SCC class shared a variety of poems. During the laying of the wreaths, Miss Hill played 0 God Our Help in Ages Past and a group of Grade 8 students read Please Wear a Poppy. At the end of the observance, the assembly participated in singing imagine, led by the Grade 7 and 8s. Mrs. McDowell invited students to lay down their poppies at the base of the cross as they retired from the gym. Grade 4-8 are making plans to go to The Centre in the Square in Kitchener on Friday, Nov. 22. • In Mrs. Bowler's kindergarten class they learned the letter C. They read a story by Eric Carle called Little Cloud. They learned all about triangles. They created a . Remembrance Day wreath, which Lexi Smith and Wyatt Stevenson laid during the service in the gym. Mrs. Smith's kindergarten class is working on the letters N and R. They are learning the colour brown. Bears is their theme for November. Dakota Godden and Andrew Patton were KC's wreath bearers during the Remembrance Day Assembly. In Grade I, they are learning addition and are reading Swing In readers. They have been making puppets and creating shows. Brooklyn Smith and Curtis Terpstra represented the class during the Remembrance Day service. Miss Hill's class was talking about pets they have. They were also learning the letters F and B. Famke Van Brugge and Janessa Smith placed the Grade 1/2 wreath during the Remembrance Day service. Danielle Stewart and David Spek laid the Grade 2/3 wreath. Zack Indoe and Marissa Lefor were the representatives chosen from Mrs. Taylor's Grade 3/4 class. The Primary SCC wreath was laid by Janelle Smith and Curtis McKinnon. Mrs. Murray's 4/5s had a test on the artists they have studied recently: George Surrat, George Ruraul, Grandma Moses and Vincent VanGough. Greg Kuepfer and Kayla Stewart were the class's wreath bearers at the Remembrance Day service. In language arts, they have written their own poems, including a Haiku. In social studies, Grade 4s have started studying Prince Edward Island while Grade 5s are learning about the human body. Mr. Walker's Grade 5/6s visited the Legion in Brussels. Rebecca Wilbee and Randy Zwep represented the class by laying a wreath to honour fallen soldiers during the Remembrance Day service. A couple of students in Miss Henry's class need to be mentioned, as their skills and willingness to help lent to the meaning of the Remembrance Day service. Mrs. Goodall and Mrs. McDowell would like to extend a special thanks to Grade 7 •students, Anna Glen and Lindsay Stewart, for scanning and putting together the Grade I artwork slideshow for the school to enjoy. John Bentley and Dena Davidson from Grade 7 and Grade 8s Alyssa Lewis and Jim Cochrane were wreath bearers.
