Heather Michie and nine-month old Tyson enjoy the warm morning sun in the expansive family room created by a two- storey addition to their ranch-style house. The second floor doorway will eventually lead to the upper level of a two- tiered deck. A bar and pool room joins the family room to the right, providing plenty of room for entertaining. (Janice Becker photo) By Janice Becker Citizen staff When Steve and Heather Michie decided to stay in their 1,200 square foot ranch-style home rather than move, some changes were required. The couple purchased the two- bedroom Morris home in 1995. As the family began to grow, they had to choose between selling the property or expanding. Agreeing that the home was on a nice lot and the view was great, the Michies sold the surrounding farmland, retaining l0 acres. Major expansion accommodates growing family In the summer of 2001, work began on the complete reworking of the home. A garage, porch, foyer and office were added to the south end. At the north end, the two-storey addition included a magnificent family room on the lower level with the ceiling the full two-storey height as well as a master bedroom. This has now become the focal point of the family's living and entertaining space. The spacious room is flooded with light during the early part of the day, thanks to the two-storey windows on the east side. This room was adjoined, to the existing portiori of the finished basement which houses a bar and pool table. "It is perfect for entertaining," says Heather, "because we can spread out." Another 'must-have' feature of the addition is a playroom for three- year-old Sydney and her nine- month-old brother Tyson. "They can have all their toys in there and after we can just shut the door," says Michie. The Michies have made that room special for the children, even leaving the drywall unfinished so they can create their own works of art on the walls. Another outstanding feature of the family room and staircase which circles the room is the woodwork. "We weren't sure about all the woodwork, but our carpenter convinced us the look and the value would be worth it. It was," she says. The hallways on the upper level are also all hardwood flooring, an easy care alternative. Though as yet unfinished, the Michies plan a two-tiered deck off the family room, one level leading from the family room to the back yard and the other exit will be just down the hall from the master bedroom where a hot tub may one ,day sit. The addition of the family room allowed the Michies to convert the previous room into a formal dining room with plenty of expansion space for a long table. The south-end addition houses two of Michie's favourite component. The new porch and foyer allow guests to come into the home, removing shoes and coats before entering the kitchen. The previous entryway led directly into that workspace. Heather says this was very important, particularly on a farm. There is also an entry which leads to the basement for clean up after chores or the storage of hockey gear. The porch deck is constructed of a vinyl-like product, which though somewhat more expensive than wood, says Michie, it will last much longer. It also has a slip-resistant surface. The foyer flooring is a textured ceramic tile, perfect for the wet boots of winter. The room which will eventually house her home office is also located in this section. Michie says the project went very smoothly as they were still able to live in the original rooms while the additions Were being built. "That helped eliminate some of the dust," she says, "as the original walls were not cut into until necessary." However, expecting her second child through much of the construction phase, Michie says the noise was a little hard on her. Her husband, Steve, designed the renovation so they were able to include all the things they wanted. Continued on page 13
