THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2002. Grey Central Echo Students training for cross-country meets • • Grey Central athletes have been busy training for upcoming cross country runs. Runners will have the opportunity to compete at several different levels, starting this Wednesday with the school competi- tion. organized by coaches Miss Van Bolhuis and Mrs. Colquhoun. Next Tuesday. Oct. 8, teams from area schools will travel to Prey for the north area meet. Participating schools will be: Howick Brussels, East Wawanosh, Turnberry, Wingham, Kingsbridge and possibly Sacred Heart from Wingham. Students who place well at this event will travel to Mitchell the fol- lowing week to participate in a dis- trict event. In Mrs. Bowler's class they are practising the letter S. They, had an edible snack that was'green, yellow and red. These activities really moti- vated students to read and sing their Red Means Stop song on the week- end. Mrs. Van Vliet and Mrs. Smith teach kindergarten phys ed. They report that the students have been doing a great job at movement and co-ordination activities. They have enjoyed playing a game called People to People, where they have practised various movement activi- ties and finding partners. This week, Mrs. Smith's kinder- garten C class enjoyed reading a poem entitled Alligator Pie. They are still working on the letter A. As a part of their apple unit, they made applesauce. Mr. Park's Grade 2/3 class is learning about families of Japan in , social studies. In, math, they are learning about grid co-ordinates using chessboards. They have got fish in their aquari- um now. Mrs. Taylor's Grade 3/4 class has been studying some interesting top- ics in science. The Grade 3s have been learning the important parts,of plants, which are the stem, the roots and the flowers. Grade 4s are study- ing pulleys and gears with Mrs. McDowell. During language arts, the class has been reading levelled books. They have also been working on their re- telling skills in the library with Mrs. Mitchell.. They are currently using Kid Pix software to create a comput- er slideshow that shows how to do an everyday task in sequence. The class is studying maps in social stud- ies. They have learned about the importance of a map's legend and the symbols on maps. The Grade 4s have been working on addition, subtraction and multi- plication facts in math with Mrs. Henry. To assist them with their number facts, Lhey have also been working with number patterns. Grade 3s are studying place value with Mrs. Taylor. In art, the class has created beautiful trees using con- struction paper and tissue paper. Their trees will soon be inhabited by a squirrel. The Grade 4s are accomplishing a lot in French. Since the beginning of the year, they have made progress with counting. They are also learn- ing to talk about the weather in French. Mrs. Murray's Grade 4/5s are enjoying the study of Georges Seurat as well as creating Van Gogh art. They are doing novel studies on the books Stuart Little 2, Two Against the North and Ramona Quimby in language arts. In math, they are reviewing graphing, pat- terning and addition. Mr. Walker's Grade 5/6 has been busy with developing some of the concepts they have been studying. In Grade 5 science, they have been researching solar-powered vehicles using some interesting websites. One of the interesting activities they have been doing in language arts has involved using storywebs to chart plot development. • The Grade 7 class has been learn- ing about tropical storm Isidore and the impact of a storm of this magni- tude. In addition, they have also fin- ished their first review unit in math and will be starting measurement this week.' Grade 8 students attended an informative leadership session at East Wawanosh Conservation Area on Friday. There they learned some co-operative games to teach to younger students in their role as playground leaders. Grade 1/2s have been celebrating the arrival of fall with many creative endeavours in art. They have been working on storytelling in the library. They have drawn pictures about a story that Mrs. Mitchell read to them and are practising these illustrations to help them retell the tale. The three September birthdays are Kenny, Ryan and Landon. The Grade 4-8 SCC class has been doing a study on slavery. Grade 4/5 students have made a long timeline illustrating key dates in the history of slavery, from 1600 to the late 1800s. On Tuesday, Sept. 24 the class went on a field trip to the Stratford- Perth Museum to see the Secrets of the Underground Railway exhibit. Artifacts on display at the exhibit were complemented with a dramatic component. Actors dressed in Civil War costumes added to the students' understanding. They made quilt blocks which have been assembled to make a Freedoni Quilt. The Primary SCC class has written letters to Robert Munsch and are hoping to receive a reply. They have painted the community bowl which so many people contributed to on Meet the Teacher Night. It is on dis- play in Miss Van Bolhuis's room.
