The Citizen, 2002-10-02, Page 19Congratulations to the winner of the 2002 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle -Pat Hulley of RR#2 Staffa- The Vanastra & District Lions and the Vanastra Recreation Centre Committee would like to thank anyone who purchased a ticket, businesses, organizations and volunteers who helped make the fundraising campaign a tremendous success. PAGE 19 Area students get awards from SDHS Friday evening was the final commencement for Seaforth District High School and the graduating classes of 2001/02. Over $100,000 in awards was presented during the evening. Walton area students did very well. Katie Emmrich was the valedictorian and received the Plumbsteel Plaque. She also received the Governor General's Academic Medal and eight other bursary awards. Erin Rock received the Canon Jack Howard James Award as well as five other bursary awards. Karla Kale received The Huron Expositor English award and two other bursaries. Cindy McClure received the math, algebra and geometry award and six other bursary awards. John Glauser received the math-calculus award plus two others. Kelly McDonald received two bursary awards. Meagan and Erin Beuerman each received a bursary award. Receiving the Seaforth Minor Sports Council Award was Krista Shortreed. Nadine Ringgenberg received the Grade 10 French award. Tanya Rea received the Jean Hildebrand Award. Charlene Thompson received the Susan and Bertha Ross Award. Trish McClure was awarded the TD Canada Trust Creative Arts Award. Ken McCallum was awarded the Seaforth Automotive and Industrial Supply Technical Studies Award. Kevin Wilbee was awarded the Seaforth Lions Club Business Award. The Geoff Banks Award for the student who exemplified and promoted the qualities of goodwill, humour, friendship and respect among staff and students of the SDHS community was presented by Randy Banks, Patty Banks and Greg Medd to Steve Carnochan. Receiving Ontario Secondary School Diplomas from Walton area were Erin Beuerman, Brian Dolmage, Darryl Houston, Ken McCallum, Lindsay McClure, Tina McClure, Scott McDonald, Tanya Rea, Charlene Thompson, Brandi Williamson, Robert Mitchell, Karla Kale and Cindy McClure. Students receiving their Ontario Academic Credit (OAC) certificates were Chris Blake, Katie Emmrich, Paul Linton, Kelly McDonald and Erin Rock. Congratulations to all our Walton- area students who have accomplished outstanding results during their secondary school years. Good luck to those going on to higher education and to those entering the work force. They made apple prints, traced As, learned some alligator fingerplays and played Farmer Brown's Apple game. They enjoy their small group rotation of only four or five children per group. The toddler class has been working on activities related to the letter T. They have been discussing the importance of brushing their teeth, practised 'walking on their tiptoes and learned about triangles. They really enjoyed visiting with Tigger (a puppet) during the group time. In Many local farmers and friends enjoyed the hospitality of Don and Pat Dalton on Tuesday for their appreciation and Pioneer plot tour. The tours began at 10:30 and a barbecue lunch followed. Recovering in hospital following surgery is Lila Storey. She is in Stratford and will remain there for a couple of weeks. A cheery card or visit is always appreciated. Jim and Anne Bosman are new grandparents. Daughter Tracy and husband Paul McLennan welcomed Sabryn Lauren into their lives. All are doing well. Congratulations to them all. Duff's United Church was busy this week. On Tuesday, members of the church board and WUCC attended the Huron Perth Presbytery meeting held at Mitchell United Church. The committee meetings were at 4 p.m. with supper at 5:30 p.m. The worship program began at 6:30 p.m. A presentation by the Huron County Health Unit on basic food handling and safety was the workshop. Margaret Hearn was installed as the chairperson of the Huron Perth Presbytery. Attending from Walton were Joan Tuchlinsky, Leona McDonald, Helen Craig, Betty The former 16th of Grey line welcomed a new baby last week. A new son named Cory was welcomed by parents Heather Dobson and Shawn Elliott. Congratulations to them and great-grandmother Helen Dobson. Congratulations to John and Pat Gillis on their 25th wedding anniversary. They hosted an invited dinner for family, then welcomed friends and neighbours for a social evening. There were many locals at the Shortreed sale on Wednesday. There were many items available that I had no idea what they were. Antiques and McCallum and Judy Lee. On Saturday a memorial service was held for the late Dr. Glen Oliver, formerly of Walton. Over 200 family, friends, relatives and professional acquaintances gathered to celebrate his life. Words of remembrance on his medical accomplishments were delivered by Dr. Elwood Dunn of Sudbury (a classmate at medical school) and Dr. Jim Bain of London. Pat Cerullo, a fellow pilot and friend spoke of his love of flying and outstanding human kindness. Mrs. Mavin Bell, Glen's sister, spoke of a younger Glen and growing up around Walton. Mrs. LeeAnn Oliver-McFayden spoke of her father and being the child, one of four, of a top eye specialist in the country and of the loving family man he was. Neil McGavin, life-long friend, spoke last of what a good friend Glen had been and how he had never forgotten his roots here in Walton. Graeme Craig sang Wind Beneath My Wings. Following the blessing the recessional was led by Piper Don Martin-. People attended from Minneapolis, Alberta, New England, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Toronto, Sudbury, London, Rhode Island, Stratford and local areas. The Walton unified board met on Wednesday evening to discuss the normal business affairs of the church. A fundraising committee will be formed with Darryl and Glenda Morrison as chairs. Other members are invited to join the committee and come up with new and interesting fundraising ideas. The board is looking for a new Presbytery representative to begin in January. The commitment is to attend four meetings per year at different churches in the Presbytery area.-Call Joan Tuchlinsky if interested or for more information. The Walton Hall Board did the food booth and enjoyed their day as well. Visiting in the Walton area are Bill and Beth Walsh from Hagersville. They are relatives of Bill and Margery Humphries and Mary Humphries. Kim (Humphries) Kruse and mom Mary spent the day together on Wednesday. They travelled to Elmwood to Mary's other daughter Wenda's and saw her new home. Sherry McCall will be teaching clogging at Brussels, Morris and The sacrament of baptism was celebrated Sunday.. A full house was on hand to witness the baptism of Reece Everett Lawrence Hamilton, son of Adam and Tammy Hamilton and Christopher Glen Michael McFayden, son of LeeAnn Oliver- McFayden and David McFayden. Family and friends of the Hamiltons were invited to their home for dinner following the baptism with guests from Embro, Atwood and areas joining them.The family and friends of the McFaydens gathered at the Walton Inn for a family meal after the church service. Joan Tuchlinsky's reflection was on Marriage Encounter, a group that encourages couples to work on nurturing their relationship with each other. Joan and Brian demonstrated Grey beginning in October if more interest is shown. Give the arena or Sherry a call. Attending the Stratford Festival on Saturday evening were Karin and Lee Ann McDonald. They saw Romeo and Juliet and thought it was excellent. Rounding out the month of September for birthdays are Peggy Ryan, Karen Hoegy, Ashley Stevenson, Nancy Godkin, Bill Gulutzen, Michael Bernard, Ron Bennett, Brett Moffett, Tom Williamson, Ron Clarke, Arlene Vandenakk, Barb Durrell, Gary Williamson and Steve Black. an exchange between them on how life, children, work, sports, etc. can come between couples and how they communicate with one another. The Marriage Encounter group encourages listening and expression of feelings to one another. It is a working weekend of discovery led by a United Church clergy person and spouse and three other lay couples. It is for couples of all ages. For information call Joan.
