The Ontario fall seatbelt campaign
began in Huron County Sept. 28. It
runs until Oct. 12.
Last year OPP officers in' the
county stopped 6,355 vehicles
charging 99 people while warning
another 51 people over the non-use
of seatbelts.
"This was a vast improvement
from the year before in Huron," said
Sr. Const. Don Shropshall, "and
OPP are looking at the figures
dropping again this fall,"
Ontario leads the country in
seatbelt usage with a 92.5 per cent
average, which is above the national
average of 84.5 per cent.
According to Transport Canada,
it's estimated that 11,690 drivers and
front-seat passengers of cars and
light-duty trucks liveS were saved
nationally by 'seatbelts over the last
I I years.
Approximately one-third of
drivers and passengers in fatal
collisions- in Ontario were not
wearing their seatbelt when they
died.
Estimates suggest- that at least 33
per cent of child car seats are
installed incorrectly and as many as
25 per cent of rear-facing infant
seats were incorrectly installed
.forward facing with more than 30
per cent of toddler seats installed
without a tether strap.
Results of hands7on inspections at
child seat clinic currently report
incorrect usage rates of
approximately 80 per cent.
Studies have identified the
"profile" of the typical non-user of
seatbelts: young, male, driving a
light-duty truck, more likely to have
other traffic violations on record,
and more likely to engage in other
unsafe driving behaviour, including
drinking and driving.
Also in Huron County police have
identified a second group, retired or
older farmers who are driving from
farm to 'farm or from their new
residence in town to the old
farm.
This is supported in the study that
indicates seatbelt usage is lower in
rural communities. .
According to the 2000 Ontario
Road Safety Annual Report there
has been a significant decrease in the
number of people killed and injured
in fatal and personal injury
collisions since 1988:
The number of drivers killed in
collisions has dropped from 653 in
1988 to 437 in 2000 and the number
of passengers killed in collisions has
dropped from 350 in 1998 to 243 in
2000.
The Huron OPP have conducted
checks within communities and have
identified areas w,bere seatbelt use is
lower and other areas where seatbelt
use was very good. "We want to turn
the trend around and decrease the
number of crashes that are occurring
in Huron County," said Shropshall.
For four years in a row the number
of crashes has increased in the
county. Over the next two weeks.,
OPP officers will be spending more
time in slowing traffic, checking
seatbelts and enforcing all traffic
violations.
"You the public can make a
difference, slow down, obey the
rules of the road and if offenders are
spotted contact the OPP or use the
Road Watch forms that were
supplied by the Road Watch Safety
Committee made up by volunteer
members of Huron County."
Blyth woman
opens e li ni
Residents of the north Huron area
will now have another location
where they can have their hearing
checked or hearing aids repaired.
Laurie Van Wyk, a hearing
instrument specialist and Blyth
resident, opened The Hearing Care
Centre in Wingham in July,
expanding on the services already
offered at the Clinton location.
Noticing that many patients at the
Clinton clinic were travelling from
the north Huron area, the centre staff
began looking for a Wingham
location. Van Wyk' will now be
spending three days at the new
centre and two days in Clinton.
Van Wyk told the Wingham
Advance-Times she was very excited
and looking forward to the
providing the needed service.
