From the Minister's Study
Minister considers refreshing practice
By Rev. Cathrine Campbell
Brussels, Belgrave
Presbyterian Churches
Whenever .one goes to an event or
gathering, be it happy or sad, there is
usually a time of refreshment
following - at least in Brussels and
Belgrave. This is an excellent practice
I wholeheartedly endorse and those
who know me know that there is not a
goodie that will escape my attention
nor a community meal that will be
missed, except in the most unusual
circumstances.
As well when visiting, one is
usually offered refreshment; whether
a simple glass of water or elaborate
desserts and the offer is gladly
accepted.
But, what is the root of this? Most
of us have sufficient nourishment
from our daily meals, but we all offer
and accept refreshment at other times
of day.
I think this is a reflection of an age-
old understanding of our place in this
world and the care that is given first
by our Creator. From the beginning
God gives us what is needful for our
daily existence and then we are given
more. And we are to enjoy it.
We have the beauty of the earth and
sky. we have the challenges of life and
the gifts of joy, compassion, care, and
love. We are richly blessed and then
even more blessed.
And so we share with friends and
family, but not only with them for we
should also be mindful of the
instructions given in the letter to the
Hebrews "Let mutual love continue.
Do not neglect to show hospitality
of strangers, for by doing that some
have entertained angels without
knowing it." (Hebrews 13:1-2)
We are not to be hoarders of what
we are given but givers, and in that
giving we often receive more than we
give.
Our times of refreshment are times,
usually, of relaxation and
conversation and from that we gain
not only bodily nourishment but
personal nourishment for we realize
that we have worth, our ideas have
substance and we gain knowledge of
people of worth, as well.
It is no accident then that we enjoy
coming together to be hospitable, to
receive hospitality and know that it is
a part of the fabric of our lives that is
to be. treasured and preserved.
In the letter of Peter, First Peter
Chapter 4 under the heading of Good
Stewards of God's Grace we are told:
"Above all maintain constant love for
one another, for love covers a
multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one
another without complaining. Like
good stewards of the manifold grace
of God, serve one another with
whatever gift each of you has
received. Whoever speaks must do so
as one speaking the very words of
God; whoever serves must do so with
the strength that God supplies, so that
God may be glorified in all things

through Jesus Christ. To him belongs
the glory and the power forever and
ever. Amen. (I Peter 4:8-1 I )
Our hospitality does not need to be
elaborate but it does need to be
sincere for in our giving we give
thanks not only for the gifts of
comradeship and friendship but also
we show the goodness of our Creator.
Be refreshed, share refreshment,
and know that we are all people who
will find in Christ a Heaven where
there 'is a place for us and we will he
welcomed at the joyous feast.
