Wingham hospital pulls out o HPHP
By Mark Noakes
Wingham Advance Times
Judith Gaunt, chair of the
Wingham and District Hospital,
reports the board decided to pull out
of the Huron Perth Hospital
Partnership and gave its mandatory
one-year notice that will come into
effect Sept. 6, 2003.
In a special hour and half meet-
ing, closed to the media, the board
also suggested that they were will-
ing to enter into negotiations to
allow an earlier dissolution of the
partnership if all the other hospitals
leave in the future. "We're just sit-
ting here waiting to find out," Gaunt
said.
Gaunt said the vote to leave was
unanimous from,the 13 board mem-
bers, but it was not recorded.
"We need to do these things and
then look at where we go from
here," Gaunt said a day after the
Sept. 5 meeting.
Wingham was the third hospital
in Huron-Perth to give its. notice.
The first came from Stratford hospi-
tal and the second from Seaforth
last month.
Four days after the Wingham
decision it was announced that
Listowel has pulled out of the part-
nership as well.
In the partnership Listowel and
Wingham had shared services and
administrative staff.
Gaunt assured hospital users that
health services at Wingham will
remain unchanged and the commu-
nity should find no difference in
their experience of care at any of the
sites or the referrals hospitals across
the counties.
The hospitals in Huron and Perth
are designated as Rural Network 10
by tie Ministry of Health and Long
Term Care's Health Services
Restructuring Commission in 2000.
While the existing partnership
agreement may change, there will
continue to be an expansion from
government levels that the eight
hospitals work together on shared
services.
Gaunt said it is likely that a new
agreement will be formed over the
next year or so. There are many
services that are presently shared
across the eight sites and boards are
committed to supporting these in
the future. -
In recent months Wingham board
members expressed frustration with
a new governance system being
proposed by the partnership. Gaunt
said that- there was a proposal to
amalgamate the eight hospitals into
one hospital with eight different
sites.
"We couldn't agree with that,"
Gaunt said.
Another big blow came from the
partnership when it was announced
that new medical standards were
going to be recommended to the
partnership's executive board
before doctors had a chance to look
at the final guidelines.
Help protect the
environment
Reduce, reuse
and recycle
. That announcement had
Wingham doctors up in arms and
one physician called the action a
complete betrayal of trust.
