THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2002. 44t Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion Michigan woman gets people moving By Janice Becker Citizen staff The smell of the machines and camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts has drawn Michigan native Seva Irvine to the Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion for 10 years and she is showing no sign of a waning interest. Irvine of Port Huron, first started travelling to Ontario some 16 years ago.to attend fiddle jamborees with a friend from Lexington. It was at one of those jamboree that she first learned of Blyth's steam engine show. "I have always been fascinated with steam engines," says Irvine. "When I was a child, our neighbour had one and we could hear him starting it up. We would run to the read to watch him go past." That love of the antique monster has stayed with her, drawing her to Blyth. She began by volunteering on the people movers then turned to finding volunteers for that job. She has also been singing at the church service for many years. Three years ago. she became a director on the Thresher association board for the first time. Irvine makes the trek from Michigan each month for the regular meetings, even in the winter, as well as spending al most every weekend in the summer rustic camping in an East Wawanosh bush. After spending so much time in the Blyth area, Irvine says she hopes to be able to retire to the area. Area residents have even begun calling her the "misplaced Canadian" or "Ameradian" because of her love of the country. "Everyone (here) is so friendly and the area is more interesting," she adds. "I enjoy the people and the countryside." Irvine does not confine her entertaining to singing on the stage. She also has become known for the interesting characters she creates to "assist" Santa during the association's annual meeting. So whether riding a people mover or singing the gospel on Sunday morning, Irvine plans to be part of the Thresher Reunion for many years to come.
