Council ponders future of Belgrave wells By Janice Becker Citizen mill The futin3 of wells in Belgrave received considerable thought when North Huron councillors were asked to make decisions regarding both the Humphrey well and _ the old municipal building well. Council had previously requested the municipal well to be capped, but were asked by the Ministry of the Environment to clarify whether this meant capped or actually abandoned. Councillor Jeff Howson asked what the long-term status of the building would be with each option for the well. The old East Wawanosh municipal building, currently leased to a service bw.iness. could not he sold with the well in its current condition. If the well was closed and filled in now, the municipality would receive two-thirds funding through the OSTAR grant. said Clerk - Administrator John Stewart. However, the cost to abandon the well would only be $1,500 to $1,800, he added. It was also suggested the well could be used as an observation well for water levels and quality in the Belgrave area. However, there would be costs associated with maintaining it, said Stewart. The engineer suggested just capping the well. Councillor Murray Nesbitt agreed with this suggestion, saying new technology could be developed in the next five years to make the well the capping. usable. Councit also authorized Maitland A motion was passed approving Engineering to undertake particle counting on the Humphrey well in Belgrave and prepare an addendum - report lOr $6,500.
