4-Hers visits Walton feedlot
FROM BRUSSELS
By Ben Caldwell
The fourth meeting of the
Brussels/Belgrave 4-H Beef Club
was held Monday, Aug. 12.
Members met at the home of
leader Paul Coultes where everyone
then went to tour the feedlot of Ron
and Nicole Stevenson near Walton.
The family-run feedlot suffered a
fire in 2000 and Stevensons decided
to rebuild a new 60' x i 80' building
which houses up to 260 head of
cattle. Yearlings are brought in from
Manitoba, Prairie Livestock as well
as Keady Livestock in Ontario.
Stevenson said 80 per cent of the
cattle are Westeners because it's
easier to buy up larger quantities at a
time. All the yearlings are
individually weighed and tagged as
to what day they arrived, how much
they weighed and where they are
from.
Stevenson has the cattle on a corn-
fed beef program. They start with
hay and are on full feed within a
five-week period.
When the Limousin cattle reach
the desired weight they are shipped
to Norwich Packers.
Cattle can eat anywhere from 24 -
27 lbs. of grain per day. They are fed
once a day to help prevent spoilage
and waste. The cattle are bedded
with sawdust which packs well. The
200-acre farm is 60-acre pasture and
the rest is soybeans, barley, hay.
Ron and Nicole keep busy with
their farming enterprise and their
young family, Ashley, Brett and
newest arrival Allison. Josh Bruton
thanked Ron for allowing the club to
