PAGE 19. First Anglican services held in Shane's log hotel The first Anglican Church (Church of England) services were held in Mr. W. Shane's log hotel near the Grand Truck railroad in 1860, when the Irish missionary Mr. Carmichael would walk the 10 miles from Clinton for the occasional meeting. Mr. Carmichael was later consecrated Bishop of Montreal then Primate for all of Canada. Rev. J. Wm. Murphy of Wingham was the first appointed minister for the congregation and services were held in Nethery's Orange Hall north of Blyth. After Blyth separated from the Belgrave and Wingham parishes in 1875, Rev. Gallagher took over. Rev. Davis visited occasionally until Rev. William Henderson was appointed in 1878 and Blyth became the permanent residence for the minister of Auburn, Blyth and Belgrave. Rev. Henderson's annual stipend was $200. During his tenure, services were held at an old schoolhouse north of the village and then at the Temperance Hall on Dinsley Street, until the completion of Trinity Anglican. Just 11 months after the decision was made to build the church, it opened on Dec. 29. 1878 and cost $3,200. The lot at the corner of Dinsley and Gypsy Lane had been purchased from the Blyth estate for $50. Construction of the church suffered a setback when a severe storm blew off the roof and knocking down an end wall. James Potter donated a portion of his land, in 1881, for a cemetery. It is located west on North Street. The final burial was in 1940. A cairn was built for some of the stones and others still remain in their original location. Early in the 20th century, the spires were believed to be unsafe and were removed. The congregation acquired an organ in 1903, the interiors were painted and frescoes and electroliers were installed when Blyth acquired its'own electric plant. After the removal of the original rectory on the northeast corner of Dinsley and Gypsy Lane, a new home was built in 1911, at a cost of $2,500. Rev. Hawkins. 1916-1928, was a much-loved rector, who gave of himself to the entire community, visiting families during the deadly flu of 1918 and helping out on local farms when the young men left to serve in the army. The church was wired by hydro in 1924. At Trinity's 50th anniversary, the large cross was placed on the altar in remembrance of all those who had worshipped with the congregation in the past. During Rev. Pakenham's tenure in the late 1960s, he constructed two Sunday school rooms in the basement. Until the 1960s, Blyth, Belgrave and Auburn made up the parish, Dungannon was added for a short time, but in 1970, the parish was changed to Auburn, Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels. A propane furnace was installed in 1964, replacing the wood furnace which had earlier replaced the woodburning stove at the rear of the church In 1979, Trinity Anglican in Belgrave joined the Wingham congregation and in 1980, the rectory was switched to Brussels. When St. Mark's, Auburn, closed in the late 1980s a stained glass window from the church was installed at Trinity. During the same period, the church was made handicap accessible. • An addition housing a meeting hall, kitchen and handicap- accessible washrooms was begun in 1994. The congregation will marks its I 25th anniversary in 2003. Past ministers were: Rev. Win Henderson, 1878; Rev. G. F. Parke, 1883; Rev. H. A. Thomas; Rev. G.W. Racey, 1889: Rev. I. I..
