(Courtesy photo) Guiding movement in Blyth involves about 35 young girls The Guiding movement is strong in Blyth with roughly 35 girls involved in four units — Sparks, Brownies. Guides and Path- finders. The movement began in the village in 1978 with Grace Sargeant, Joan Clark and Grace Poore as Brownie leaders. The pack first met in the Legion, then moved to the school for a time before returning to the Legion where they continue to meet. The Brownie storage box, built by Dick Poore is still used by the present group. Present leaders are Melanie Gross and Michelle Pavio. Guides were begun by Brenda McDonald, Bev Blair and Jill Roulston in September of 1980. The present leaders are Cheryl Currie and Michelle Pavio. In September of 1987 Pam Chalmers started a Pathfinders unit with Diane Ferguson. Today's leaders are Shari Cartwright and Gisele Kelly. A Sparks group started in 1995 with Ruth Uyl and Janice Peters as leaders. Today Pavio and Currie are in charge of the unit. The highest level of achievement for Guiding at the end of Pathfinders is the Canada Cord. According to Kelly the honour does not come easily, requiring a lot of hard work and determination from the girls. In the organization's history in Blyth there have been six Canada Cord recipients: Erica Clark, Tina Burkholder, Jennifer Jackson, Lisa Kelly, Leanne Haggitt and Sharon Hartman. Gisele Kelly, who has been with the Blyth organization for 12 years tells of an exciting, as well as educational pastime for young girls. Kelly was one of the leaders to take six local Pathfinders to England on an independent Guiding trip. "That was three years of fundraising," she says. The Pathfinders recently joined with the Scouts to go rock climbing in London. For many years, the organization ran such a successful early morning booth at the annual Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Reunion show, which is attended by thousands, that they had to give it up because it became too much work. However, Kelly remembers, "Everyone came early because we had that coffee going." The girls have been involved in parades and camping excursions. Kelly also says that as a Brownie leader she like to take her girls to a theatre presentation. "They went on lots .of mini-trips, not big, but big for them." Membership in the local Guiding movement has for as long as Kelly can remember been solid. There was one year when, with no leader, Brownies didn't exist, but they came back strong the next year. Blyth has been able to sustain the interest, Kelly thinks because of the effort put forth by the leaders who keep the meetings fun with outside activities. However, she admits, with people's busy schedules finding leaders is becoming difficult. For many of the girls who come through the system, Guiding is a way of life. Nikki Brown is a high school student who has continued to help with the Blyth groups. "She is," says Kelly, "a real trooper." Jennifer Jackson assisted on a Pathfinder unit while attending college and has maintained her membership. Lisa Kelly, one of the last Guides to receive the now-past All-Round Cord, is an adult member. Erica Clark received the Duke of Edinburgh award.
