Presbyterian minister organizes Scouts
Blyth Legion 420 have been joint
sponsors. The Group committee
that year included Moody Holland
(merchant), Howard Wallace
(miller), N. Radford (bookkeeper)
and Len Rooney (farmer).
Scoutmasters were Leslie Rutledge
and Irvin Bowes.
After 1951, the Scout troop shut
down for a few years. When it was
revived in 1956, the registration fee
had doubled to 50 cents for Cubs
and $1 for Scouts. Cubmaster was
Harry Gibbons.
Some of the 21 Cubs included
Doug and Don Scrimgeour, Terry
Madill, Ron and Grant Elliott,
Robbie Lawrie, Brian and Doug
Bell. Rev. Ben De Vries was the
Scoutmaster. Scouts included Sam
Dougherty, Graham Jackson, Don
Elliott and Larry Badley.
Clair Vincent was chair of the
Group committee and' William
Mountain was secretary.
Records are again missing from
1958 to 1982 when a Beaver colony
was started by Erlene Caldwell,
Dorothy Schneider, Rosemarie Lee
and Kevin Draper. Ian Caldwell,
Jamie and Patrick Hallahan, Chris
Lee and Craig Roulston were
among the 16 Beavers.
The registration fee had risen to
$10 per person.
Carol Gross, David Lee and
Brenda Scott were Cub leaders for
16 Cubs.
Larry Walsh chaired the Group
committee. Brad Montgomery was
secretary and Charlie Shaw was
treasurer.
In 1984, the Scout troop was led
by Dave Lee, Dennis Schneider,
Allan Webster, Art Airdrie and Peter
Wiley. Connie Bromley, daughter of
Irvin Bowes became a Beaver
leader in 1984 and was associated
with 1st Blyth Scouting for 1I
years.
The original charter number for
1st Blyth was 1438. In 1988
chairperson Trish Thomson applied
to the National office for a
replacement charter because no one
could find the original. The new and
current number is 4595.
Other local people who have been
registered Scouters include Sharon
Wilson, Jackie Lantinga, Herb
Shannon, Darlene "McClinchey,
Steve Root, Heather and Jim
Jackson, John Greidanus, Heather
Verwey and Linda Hakkers.
From 1990-1994' Blyth had a
Venturer company. It was revived in
1997 and included two girls. In
recent years three local Venturers
have gone to World Jamborees:
Greg McClinchey to Korea in 1991,
Chris Knox to Holland-in 1995 and
Goodall to Chile in
all-girls Rover crew, spearheaded
by Erica Clark.
In 2001-2002, 21 Beavers, 17
Cubs, 17 Scouts and seven
Venturers were registered. The fee
was $54 per person.

Wood, Heather Wood, and Paul Safr
were Beaver leaders.
Alan Young, Nancy Hakkers and
Allan Peel were Cub leaders.
Lavern Clark, David Cartwright
and Gerald Hakkers were Scout
leaders.
Mike Scott and Arden Farrow
were Venturer advisors.
