THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 2002. FROM BRUSSELS By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-6236 887-9231 Welcome pilgrims! No, we are not in the middle of a John Wayne movie. But we are part of a worldwide visit from folks of the Catholic faith. Brussels is but a small part of the billeting process that will see many visitors from Italy invited into homes from our ecumenical community. Our friends from St. Ambrose have been busy getting things and people organized so our pilgrims will take home fond memories of Huron County. So brush up on your Italian hello. The swimming lessons have been going well and there are many children who have new skills and certificates to prove that point. There is nothing that says summer more than the tanned little bodies of swimmers in -their glory. And for the bigger bodies, Nelva is running an aqua fit program. Join the fun. Swimming in a safe environment is one of the true joys of summer. Thank you to the many organizations who support our pool now and when it was built in the )19808. The kids at the day camp sponsored by Huron East out of the BM&G Community Centre are .having a great time with games and trips, learning new skills and finding new friends. It's good to see an old program that .can be recycled so successfully. The days of summer are so special. Seeing family and friends in a relaxed state is good for the soul. Bye now, Betty G. W. At the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald The week has been pretty quiet at the Brussels Legion Branch. Full- time bartender Sandra Josling was on holidays and had a great week off, but is now back on the job. Linda and Jo-Ann managed to get the job done but are glad to have her back. Friday night's supper of sweet and sour meatballs, rice and salad was enjoyed by a large crowd. This week will be roast pork Comrade Doreen Rutledge is still in Seaforth Hospital and visitors are welcome. Just a reminder, although it seems a way off, bookings for family and business Christmas parties are already started. Aug. 11 is the Branch's fish fry. Tickets are now available for the elimination draw to be held in September: Huron East council, at its July 9 meeting, discussed the ongoing problem with the effluent from the Seaforth Creamery in light of problems with the Seaforth sewage plant. They recommended that Phil Turner, who is the municipality's official responsible for water and sewer matters consider more frequent testing and also report back to council concerning the final destination of solids removed from the plant's treatment system. *** Council endorsed a motion from Theft from arena On July 8 at approximately noon the manager of the Brussels Community Centre called OPP over a theft. Sometime that day between 9 a.m. and I I a.m. a person entered the office inside the arena and removed $500 worth of cash from one of the draws. The arena was open at the time and anyone could have walked in unnoticed. Call the local OPP or Crime Stoppers with information. the City of Woodstock to increase the minimum wage to $8 per hour and to have the minimum wage indexed to the Consumer. Price Index. *** Chief Building Official Paul Josling reported that 84 building permits had been issued to the end of June for construction valued at $5,789,800.
