From the Minister's Study
World Youth Days
come to Toronto
By Fr. Lance Magdziak
St. Michael's Roman Catholic
Church
It is hard to believe that in just a
few weeks Pope John Paul 11 will
visit, Toronto. For four days, tens of
thousands of young people (ages 16
- 35) from all over the world will
gather to meet and pray with the
Pope.
As far as I know the Pope will be
in Canada from July 25 for about
five days. I believe he will become a
newsmaker this summer. Many
young people coming frotn all over
the world will need our atten-
tion.
Sometimes I wonder why, young
people sacrifice so much to travel to
a different country, taking a break
from their busy schedule in their
lives?
Perhaps the answer I can find in
my heart. In 1991, I travelled to
Poland to be part of World Youth
Days. In 1997 I went to Paris, France
to see more than a million as I call
"kids".
Why have I done those
Pilgrimages - it was lots of fun but
also a time to pray, talk, listen, meet
all kinds of people, sleep in a bus,
taking care of those who were lost or
exhausted.
In August of 1997 with a group of
62 people, I went to Paris - the most
European city. We were
planning to stay together but in
reality different families took care of
us.
I ended up in a home of a Lutheran
pastor and his family. The only time
we talked was at breakfast and at the
end of my five-day stay.
Most from my group were very
happy with the family settings we
were given and subway tickets to
enjoy Paris.
Then there was the opening of the
Days. The Pope in his Popemobile,
crazy singing, and trying to wave at
the Pope. He told us to focus on
those days and spoke a long time
about Jesus.
My group was in a mood of
dancing, yelling and telling
everyone around us that we were
from Canada.
Several days after the opening day
were filled with teaching, Stations of
the Cross through the streets of Old
Paris, music concerts in many parks
or sports facilities.
Then came the final Vigil Night
we all had been waiting for. The
Pope came again and all night we
talked, prayed and finally slept for
maybe two ho-urs. The morning of
the final day. a big celebration and
-goodbyes!
Everything I had done .in Paris
cannot be measured by money, time
or even friendships of my group.
The fruits of the Youth Days I
believe are coming out right now -
many years after. I believe every
young person needs a special time
with God' like a rock concert or a
lonely backpack trip to Europe.
Young people are the best in
looking for God - the Pope can only
help - also looking for many values
for our. daily existence.
When •the Pope comes to TOronto
- be with him and ()piers - and I bet
you blessings will come upon every
one of you!
Seeking solace in the shade

cool refreshments under a shade tree during the Zion Mennonite Fellowship's summer church
program last week. (Janice Becker photo)
