(Vicky Bremner photo) Lightning enjoys great season l'he Blyth Lightning Mosquito minor soccer team has had a great season thus far. Members of the team are Tony Bean, John Bokhout, Darren Bouman, Lucas Egli, Jordan Good, Jennifer MacDonald, Jessica Nethery, Jai mie Parish, Craig Sal verda, Luke Siertserna, Kirsten Sjaarda, Cassandra Uyl, Joost Van Dorp, Frank Van Hittersum, and Ben Walsh. Coaches are Janet Bosma and Peter Uyl. Helping when short on players are Atoms: Colin Bokhout, . Caleb Good, Tyson , Sjaarda and Jory-Lynn Uyl. The team started out the season at home taking on the Clinton Crushers on May 9. The Lightning played hard and came out to win the game 5-2. Egli scored three goals and Good and Bokhout each scored one. Assists went to Egli; Bokhout (two), Bean, and Parish (two). Goalkeepers were Good and Egli. Game two was 'hosted by Lucknow Optimists and though •Blyth played well, they just couldn't come up with a win! The game ended with a 3-3 tie with goals going to Egli, Bean, and Bokhout. Assists came from Parish, Good, and Uyl. Goaltending duties were shared by Good, Bouman, Egli and Van Dorp. Game three was a tough game for Blyth, playing against Wingham Dark Green. Blyth started off with the first goal, but grew weary with no rest, leaving Wingham to win 6-3. Egli scored all three goals in this game, with assists from Bouman (two) and Bokhout. Goaltending duties were shared by Good and Van Dorp. At home for game four worked well for Blyth, with a 6-1 victory over Goderich Tim Horton's. Scoring two goals each were Egli, Bokhout and Parish. Assists came Irom Bean (two), Egli (two), Colin Bokhout and Bouman. Tending the net were Van Dorp and Bouman. Game five gave Blyth another win, this time 3-2 over the Clinton Cheetahs. Bokhout gave Blyth two goals and Bouman the other. Assists came from Egli (two). Van Dorp again had the duty of goalkeeper. Game six was a great victory for Blyth against Goderich Legal Eagles with a shut-out by Good and Van Dorp goaltending. Goals came from Egli, Bokhout (two), Parish, and Van Dorp, and assists from Bokhout. Egli (two), Bouman, MacDonald and Parish, giving Blyth a 5-0 win. Game seven was a low-scoring game, despite a few more attempts at goals versus Lucknow Light Blue. A great effort was put in by Blyth, which despite as few injuries, still won 2-1. Egli and Bokhout scored a goal apiece. Assists came from Bokhout and Jory-Lynn Uyl (two). Van Dorp and Good again played a very courageous game keeping the goals out of Blyth's net. Game eight was also a low- scoring game against the Blyth Thunder, with a loss of 3-2. Goals came from Egli and an assist from Bean, though many more attempts were made to put more goals in the Thunder's net. Goaltending for the Lightning was done by Van Dorp and Bouman. Game nine was a great game for the whole Blyth Lightning team with a 4-1 victory over Clinton Cosmos. Bouman gave Blyth one goal, with Jory-Lynn Uyl (two) and Tyson Sjaarda contributing as well. Assists came from Bouman (two), Sjaarda, and Salverda. Goaltending duties were shared by Good and Van Dorp, each taking a half of the game. Blyth Lightning's last home game will take place July 11 at 7:15 p.m. versus Wingham Aqua at Sparling's soccer field. " The Brussels Midget Girls have been on the road for many of their games since the first of June. Holmesville has been the only team to travel to Brussels since Sunday, June 23. This game Lesley Pepper was on the mound for Brussels. Pepper had eight strike-outs. Stacey Bowles came in to relieve, adding another two-strikeouts. Julie Moffat had a great offensive game going two for two at the plate. Moffat had a base-clearing double to finish the game. The final score was Brussels 11, Holmesville I. On June 25, Brussels travelled to Hensall. Amy Douma, Bowles and Pepper were all on the mound for Brussels. Pepper and Bowles had three strike-outs each. Jodi Semple, Douma and Moffat all went three for three at the plate. Also adding base-clearing hits were Three young athletes from the Blyth and Belgrave area will travel to Sudbury this weekend to represent this district at the Royal Canadian Legion provincial track and .field meet. Amy Cook of Belgrave, a member of the Wingham Track and Field Club will compete in the under-15 age group. In district competition, Cook earned a first in triple jump with an effort of 9.32 metres and a second in long jump with a leap of 4.55 metres. Megan Campbell of Blyth and a club member, will enter the under-17 class in high jump and triple jump. At the district meet, Campbell placed first in high jump, jumping a height of 1.50 metres and a first in triple jump, bounding 10.62 metres. Campbell and Cook are sponsored by the club, Jenna Taylor of the Blyth area is the only non-club member from this district who will be amongst the 54 athletes attending the provincial meet. Taylor will challenge her opponents with her first in shot 9.43 metres. She is also in the under-l7 group. Taylor is sponsored by the Blyth Catrina Josling, Cassie Fischer and Pepper. The final score was Brussels 19, Hensall 3. Brussels travelled to Shakespeare on July 3. Pepper and Bowles had pitching'diny for the Brussels squad. Pepper had six strikeouts while Bowles added two. Brussels had difficulty beating the Shakespeare defence. Nicole Lowe and Nicole Bernard were the only Brussels players to record a hit. The final score was Brussels 4. Shakespeare 13. Brussels then travelled to Lieury on Sunday, July 7. Bowles started on the mound registering one strike- out, Pepper came in to relieve, with nine more. Brussels continued to struggle offensively. Singles 'were hit by Pepper, Bowles, Fischer and Douma. The final score was Brussels 9, Lieury 11. Brussels will continue on the road Legion Branch 420. While a' first-place finish at the provincials does not necessarily result in a berth on the Dominion team. Crystal Taylor of the Blyth Legion says two first-place finishes are almost a guarantee. Athletes must also meet a qualifying standard. to travel to Crediton on Monday, July 8 and to Hibbert on Wednesday, July 10. The next home games will be Sunday, July 14 at 8 p.m. against Shakespeare and Monday, July 15 at 9 p.m. against Hensall. Locals to compete . at provincial meet
