trained could possibly be in the same
classroom as a five-year-old who
reads well. But he added that its just
as likely that a JK student could be
well-advanced in reading and not
amply challenged by a strictly JK
classroom.
"We know there are advantages of
(having SK and JK students together),
and we know there are
disadvantages," the director told
trustees, before suggesting the Blyth
pilot project could help staff
determine which of those factors are
most prominent.
He added, however, that "the fact is,
they're mixed almost everywhere, and
the major reason for that is the cost."
FROM BLYTH
Savings from combining SK and JK
include the ability to double up on
resources, classroom space and staff.
Stratford trustee Rod Brown
wondered whether it's prudent to
approve the pilot project, considering
those advocating the split
Kindergarten classes might not be
willing to revert to a combined format
if it's shown that money might be
saved.
However, information provided by
Parsons indicates the parent group
only requested the change if it could
be accomplished without staffing
changes. And she said the parent
group accepted board staff's caution
that, if enrolment levels change in
2003-04, an extension of the pilot
project may not be possible.
Education Superintendent Marjatta
Longston, responding to a question
from student trustee John Nater of
Mitchell District High School,
explained that the .1K curriculum is
geared towards "socialization" and
"initiation to play," while the goal for
SK students is "getting ready to
learn."

Greeting at Blyth United Church
were Mary Lou and Bonnie Stewart.
Guest minister was Rev. Cecil
Wittich and guest musician was
Margaret Kai.
Rev. Wittich's message to the
adults was, Where is God, when I'm
Hurting. If we pray to God when we
are in trouble or are hurting He will
always answer us but it might not be
the answer we want. God will
always be with us and never leave
us.
