BLYTH FESTIVAL SALUTE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 2002. PAGE 23
Country cookin' long part of Festival's appeal
Country hospitality
Rural residents may be used to the home-cooked meals served by local volunteer caterers but
for city visitors to the Blyth Festival the Country Suppers have been a big attraction for more than
20 years.
One of the charms of the Blyth
Festival is that it has never strayed
far from its roots. Anne Chislett
says, "The Blyth Festival's mission
is to produce new plays which
reflect the region and the country."
As a theatrical organization the
emphasis on plays and playwrights
is obvious but the desire to reflect
the region has gone farther. The
long standing tradition of country
suppers is another part of the
equation.
From the very early years theatre
goers have had the chance to get a
• real taste of. Huron County by
attending one of the numerous
country suppers. These suppers
prepared by the Legion Auxiliary,
Women's Institutes and church
women's groups are served at
locations in Auburn, Blyth,
Belgrave, Bluevale and Walton.
This year 12 groups will be
hosting a total of 22 suppers. By the
time they are finished on the August
31 they will have provided over
1600 people with a traditional
community supper.
Many urban Festival patrons now
consider their "country supper" an
essential part of the Blyth festival
experience. The same faces can be
seen showing up at the same suppers
year after year.
Leona McDonald, President of the
Walton Women's Institute says,
"You recognize some of them as
they come in but some are always
new." She commented, "They think
it's wonderful to get out into the
country." Although McDonald did
not know the most distant place from
which the diners had arrived she
did say they sometimes had guests
by the bus-load from places like
Sarnia.
Janice Henry, of the Blyth Legion
Ladies Auxiliary says they have one
party that comes up from the States.
She has watched that family grow
with a babe-in-arms last year.
She said, "They come because the
food really is homemade and they
also buy the jams and pickles that
the Auxiliary has for sale."
The fare is traditional and would
be familiar to any local resident.
Mashed potatoes, coleslaw,
vegetables and meat served in
generous portions, by people who
actually seem to enjoy talking to
you.
The desert table is heavily laden
with homemade goodies of which, a
diet fanatic would definitely not
approve. As always pride of place
goes to the pies which the women of
the area seem to be able to produce
in infinite numbers and spectacular
quality.
This year the Huron County Pork
Producers will be showing off the
quality of their product with a Put
Pork on Your Fork dinner on August
10.
At $11 dollars the dinners provide
the theatre patron with an affordable

country-casual alternate to
restaurant dining. As affordable as
they are for the diner they provide
local organizations with a valuable
source of funds to support
community projects.
The total raised over the years the
dinners have been held is impossible
to calculate. But this year alone over
$16,000 wilt be raised through this
simple country tradition.
