Museum committee seeks help With the go-ahead given for the construction of the first of a planned six sites, the Blyth Mini-Museum Project Committee is seeking help from people interested in the history of the village. At a meeting last week, committee chair Keith Roulston announced that Howson and Howson Limited has become the first major sponsor and that work will commence as soon as possible on the museum site to tell the history of flour milling in Blyth and the Howson family's key role in that history.' With the possibility of financial support for two more of the sites in the near future, more help is needed to research and collect material for the museums, which combine two display cases and a park bench. To date a small committee has been raising the needed funds and collecting information but with up Continued on page 22 By David Blaney Citizen staff Participants in the court challenge against the decision of the Avon Maitland board to close Seaforth District High School received a boost last Thursday. At that time a panel of Division Court Justices ruled that trustee Charles Smith's affidavit would be entered as evidence before them. Maureen Agar, a driving force behind the Seaforth Student Success Foundation, which is funding the challenge said the group was elated with the ruling. She added they were also very happy for Smith. "He is a straight arrow," she said, "and feels that what was in his affidavit was important to what is happening to our school." Agar felt that the ruling would strengthen the case for keeping Seaforth High School open. "Because he (Smith) is a trustee he is privy to the inner workings of the board," she said, "As a private individual I don't get all the information." Huron East Councillor Richard Burgess, who also attended the hearing at Osgoode Hall said the judges' argument for including the affidavit appeared to cite corporate law as well as the education act. He said it appeared the judges felt Smith's position as a trustee did not bar him from bringing to the court board behaviour which Smith felt was inappropriate. The justices appeared to feel that in the end it was up to them to decide what material was relevant. Burgess said the behaviour cited in Smith's affidavit involved "secret meetings" to talk about matters which the board should not have discussed 'in camera'. Burgess went on to say that Smith alleges in his affidavit that, "meetings were held at which no minutes were taken and from which some trustees were excluded." Steve Howe, a spokesperson for the hoard said that after listening to the justices and in the interests of preventing any further delays the lawyers for all participants agreed to included Smith's affidavit. Howe emphasized that the lawyer for the board would be able to cross- examine Smith about the contents of his affidavit and had the right to file further affidavits on the board's behalf. Burgess said applicants opposing the board's decision to close Seaforth high school were encouraged by Thursday's proceedings. "We feel that we are going to have a full airing of the issue." The full hearing of the court challenge has been postponed to June 21 to allow the panel of Justices to review all the material related to the case.
