Belated Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year!
As you know, Patty Banks has
retired from her duties as Walton
correspondent and has passed the
pen on to me. I asked Patty what she
found most interesting about the job
and she said she liked learning about
people and the interesting experi-
ences in their lives. Quite often she
was heard saying, "Oh, I didn't
know that you did that".
As we span many decades in our
church membership, it was always
interesting to learn about how people
coped and the changes they went
through. We thank Patty for her
seven years of interesting stories and
news and her efforts to keep people
informed of what was going on in
Walton. I have already learned that
people become very careful what
they say as they finish with "you're
not going to put that in the paper".
Please feel free to call me with any
news you would like included in the
Walton news (by Monday morning)
at 887-6570.
Lots of things have happened
around Walton since the last issue so
let's see what I remember. An unex-
pected early Christmas gift was a big
surprise for Karen Hoegy and her
husband Barry as they were winners
of a new 2002 Volvo S40 through the
Canadian Cancer Society. Karen
says they really need a car, but hasn't
decided if they will take the car or
cash. Congratulations to the Hoegys.
The Christmas Eve service was
well attended by old and new friends
of Walton United Church. Many
members of our extended church
family enjoyed a night of special
music provided by Patty Banks,
Brian Black, Jennifer Black, Chad
Spaulding, Susanna Lyman, Phyllis
Mitchell, Glenda Morrison, Duff's
choir, Duff's youth choir, Brian and
Brandon McGavin and Joan
Tuchlinsky. The weather may not
have been the greatest but it was a
wonderful service for the celebration
of Christ's birth.
The news of a belated Christmas
gift was a blessing received by
Laverne and Marion Godkin, the
arrival of a baby girl on Boxing Day
to their daughter Donna and husband
Cameron Blair of London.
Congratulations to all of them on
Reagan Nicole's arrival.
A bit of bad and good news for the
Doug Mitchell family. They were
involved in a car accident after
Christmas. Thank goodness there
were no fatalities, but Doug did
receive serious injuries and the chil-
dren were treated and released. Doug
was hospitalized and has since bee
released but will take some timik
before he is recovered. Our best
wishes to him for a fully and speedy
recovery.
Walton United Church ended 2001
with guest speaker Brian Black lead-
ing the service. It will begin 2002
with new faces taking over the treas-
urer and secretarial duties of the
chtdch. The new treasurer is Dianne
McCallum and secretary is Heidi
McClure. Barb Durell will finish her
duties with preparing the annual
report and present it at the annual
meeting Jan. 27 at 11 a.m.
Beginning our new year also
begins our new service times.
Church now begins at 9:30 a.m. so
rise and shine a little bit earlier on
Sunday morning.
The January ushers are Brian
Wilbee, Graeme Craig and Murray
Dennis. Greeters for Jan. 13 will be
Keith and Gloria Wilbee.
The year 2002 had a sad start for
Brian and Joan's family as Joan's
father Ron Tuchlinsky passed away
New Year's Day. Some members of
the congregation travelled to
Kitchener for the memorial service
on Saturday. Our deepest sympathy
and condolences to Joan and her
family.
Marjorie Huether was here from
Florida over the Christmas holidays
and enjoyed the holidays with fami-
ly, and friends. She has since
returned with her friends from
Collingwood and- Amherstburg
accompanying her on the drive-
down.
Melissa Whitmore was guest
speaker at Duff's service Sunday,
Jan. 6 and led an interesting and
meaningful service. She announced
that the WUCC meeting being held
Wednesday night at 8 p.m. will fea-
ture guest speakers from the Caring
and Sharing Program from Seaforth.
Members are also asked to bring a
gift for the Women's Shelter.
.The Walton Hall was busy on the
weekend with a combination broom-
ball and baseball party. Brain storm-
ing for players for a Waltoh Brewers
team for this year was a hot topic and
rehashing old broomball stories as
well. The hall is available for rent at
reasonable rates at 887-6735.
Margaret Craig was hospitalized
during the Christmas season, but has
since returned to her home at
Huronlea.
Birthdays celebrated this past
week were Michael Craig, Ben
Hoegy, Julie Mitchell, Marjory
Fraser and Robbie Mitchell. Their
ages will have to remain a mystery
but belated wishes to them all.
