The Citizen, 2002-01-09, Page 13On top of things With the arrival of the new year, the new Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church con- tinues to take shape. Workers scrambled all week to get the shingles on before Mother Nature dumped more snow. Volunteers have been industriously constructing the church, as well as preparing and serving meals for the workers. On this biting cold day, some 15 people were donating their time in the hopes the work will be complete by April. By Brent Kipfer Brussels Mennonite Fellowship Toward the end of the 19th centu- ry, a Swedish chemist had an unusu- al experience. Alfred Nobel woke up one morn- ing, grabbed his newspaper and sat down to read. It was an ordinary day. When he opened the paper, however, he had the shock of his life. He began reading a report about his own death. He read that: "Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, who died yesterday, devised a way for more people to he killed in a war than ever before, and he died a very rich man." It was actually Alfred's brother who had passed away; a newspaper reporter had bungled the facts. Still, Nobel could not shake those words from his mind. He decided that he wanted to be known for something other than finding a way for people to kill each other more efficiently and getting rich in the process. So, of course, he established the Nobel Prize for scientists and writers who work for peace. He said, "Everyone ought to have the chance Brussels hosts Alpha course Brussels Mennonite Fellowship and St. John's Anglican Church, Brussels are planning to offer the Alpha Course this winter and spring. The Alpha Course is an opportuni- ty to explore the Christian faith in a- relaxed, non-threatening setting over 10 thought-provoking sessions, with an optional weekend away. Over 18,500 Alpha courses run in churches, prisons, universities and numerous-other settings, in 125 countries around the world, and the materials have been translated into 33 different languages from Shona, French, Croatian, Chinese and Russian. This winter, the Alpha course is being offered at more than 1,500 churches in Canada, including Brussels Mennonite Fellowship. St. John's Anglican Church, Brussels, plans to run the course in the spring. The 10-week course, built around a meal and small group discussion, makes Christianity accessible to men and women of today's culture. To learn more about the Alpha course, come to an Alpha Celebration Meal at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship, Jan. 18, 6:30 p.m. Enjoy a meal, watch a video presentation called "Christianity: Boring, Irrelevant, Untrue?" and hear from someone who has already taken the course. RSVP to Brent Kipfer (887-6388) by Sunday, Jan. 13. If someone were to write a report of your life, what would they say? What qualities might they notice? Do you ever wish you could rewrite parts of the story? I can cer- tainly think of days that I would like to rewind and start again. The book of Isaiah takes a hard look at Israel's recent past. It's not a pretty picture. The people have been running after everything except God. Isaiah looks back with deep regret. God has every right to put an end to the whole relationship. Still, God holds out the promise of a new beginning: Come now, let us argue it out, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow. (Isaiah 1:18) A fresh blanket of snow seems to make the whole world new (I try to remember that when I am shovelling my driveway!). The countryside seems to gain a new beauty. In a similar way, Jesus Christ offers to cover us with his forgive- ness so that our lives can be made new. This is an incredible gift - something we can come to under- stand through personal experience. Unlike snow, it does not melt away when the weather gets warm! Jesus gives us the opportunity to receive a new epitaph - a new life- story made possible through his gift of forgiveness. Last week I opened up a new 2002 pocket date book. There is some- thing very satisfying about seeing crisp, blank pages ready to be used. With what does God want to fill it? What kind of story might God want to write for you this year? 55 s., to to Id to 6; )9 )9 td 0; ) 9 s., 38 50 to From the Minister's Study What might they say? „Olin Please Recycle Toi 401 This Newspaper
