County approves
study for septage
Huron County council approved
the hiring of an engineering firm to
conduct an $18,000 study of the
problem of how to deal with sewage
pumped from septic tanks.
The issue has taken on urgency
because of the large number of
households in the county served by
septic tanks and the Ministry of
Environment's ban on winter spread-
ing of septage on farm fields.
The three-part study by B. M.
Ross and •Associates will survey
sewage treatment "plantsin the coun-
ty to see if there is additional treat-
ment capacity available,talking to
septic tank contractors to see what
volume is involved and determining
the probable capital costs to provide
a dumping service at treatment
plants.
Scott Tousaw of the planning
department explained the county
will pay for the study but the opera-
tion of a handling and treatment sys-
tem would likely be paid for by a
charge on haulers and homeowners
whose septic tank is being cleaned
out.
Huron gets grant
for groundwater
study
Huron County will receive a
provincial grant to cover 85 per cent
of a $489,000 study on groundwater.
The study will include research to
characterize the county-wide
aquifer to find areas where the
underground water storage areas are
vulnerable to contamination and
assess use from these reservoirs.
There will also be studies of larger
public wells including mapping
water supply areas, water pathways,
and to assess vulnerability.
