7 Bullet& continue to play well in season
THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2002. PAGE 7.
The Brussels Bulletts travelled to
Ilderton for a regular season match
against their Intermediates on
Monday, Dec. 18
Brussels opened the scoring when
Rebecca Burton scored on a nice
feed from Candace Procter and
Alicia Dick late in the opening
frame. The Bulletts added to that
lead minutes later when Kern Meier
fired one by the Ilderton goaltender
setup by Michelle Cook.
The Bulletts seemed to fade in the
last-half of the game allowing their
opponent to come back. Ilderton
gained their first goal with minutes
left in the second period.
They struck again in the third
frame.
Moments later Ilderton again
threatened to score but were turned
away by Nicki Berfelz in the Bullett
cage. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Brussels hosted the Strathroy
Intermediates on Saturday, Dec. 22.
The Bulletts struck first with Ashley
Ritchie ripping a shot in assisted by
Rachel Elliott and Meier in the first
period.
The Bulletts increased that lead to
two early in the second when Elliott
scored assisted by Ritchie and Meier.
Sarah McDonald blasted a wrist
shot in marking her first of the sea-
son assisted by Dick and Jenn Hopf.
At the 9:09 mark of the third period
Meier got into the act scoring a goal
assisted by Elliott and Ritchie.
Ritchie then scored her second of
the night assisted by Elliott, who
scored her second only two minutes
later assisted by Meier and Ritchie:
The final goal came when Meier
scored her second of the game assist-
ed by Ritchie and Elliott. The
Bulletts skated away with an impres-
sive 7-0 win.
The Bulletts continued on the road
with a game the following night. in
Sarnia. Brussels applied early pres-
sure but was unsuccessful in an
attempt to take the lead.
Sarnia hit the scoreboard first
when a high wrist shot eluded
Berfelz. Sarnia struck again in the
dying minutes of the first period to
build that lead to two.
The Bulletts never gave up and
battled through a scoreless second
period with the Starfires.
The Bulletts came out on fire in the
third period. Nicole White passed the
puck up to Cook who in turn passed
to Elliott who beat the Sarnia goalie.
The Bulletts tied the game on the
power play. Cook picked up the
rebound off White's shot, circled the
back of the net and fired a pass in
front to a wide open Ritchie who
slammed it in. The Bulletts compet-
ed the comeback with 5:14 to go
when Meier sent a lead pass to
Ritchie who snapped a backhand
shot in the Starfires cage to give the
Bulletts a 3-2 victory.
Berfelz sparkled in the Bullett
cage frustrating the Sarnia forwards.
The Bulletts made their way to
Mitchell Saturday, Dec. 29. Candace
Procter opened the scoring for
Brussels finding a loose puck in front
of the Mitchell goal and snapping it
in.
Mitchell came back to tie it up
with only 11 seconds left in the peri-
od.
Meier restored the Bullett lead
midway into the second frame assist-
ed by Ritchie and Cook.
Mitchell tied it again at the 12:42
mark of the third period.
Berfelz did an outstanding job in
the Brussels net to solidify the 2-2
tie.
Brussels welcomed the Lucan
Intermediate to town on Saturday,
Jan. 5.
The teams battled through a score-
less first period with Lucan having
the upper hand in the play. The
Bulletts showed some fire in the sec-
ond scoring early. White wristed a
shot at the Lucan goalie and the
rebound popped out to Kristen
Palmer who slammed it in for the
early lead.
With 40 seconds to go Ritchie
snapped one by the Lucan goalie set
up by Palmer.
Early in the third period Procter
scored off a Meier rebound to give
the Bulletts a commanding 3-0 lead.
However, Lucan came bounding
back scoring twice to make it a one-
goal game.
Berfelz was fantastic in the Bullett
cage with many dives and glove
saves to keep Brussels in the lead..
