THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2002. FROM BRUSSELS At the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald Happy New Year to all, may 2002 bring you all good health, happiness and peace. Lots has been happening at the Brussels Legion Branch since I last wrote. The Christmas draws on Dec. 22 were fun with great prizes (even if I do say so myself). Many went home with something to share with their Christmas guests. Our Christmas gift exchange had a lot of laughs, switching of gifts and was really enjoyed by all. New Year's Eve saw an enthusias- tic bunch of around 60 usher in 2002. As usual a great potluck meal was enjoyed by all and there was lots of dancing. There was even a proposal of marriage on the dance floor and an ecstatic bride-to-be welcomed in the New Year. Friday night suppers were on hold for the holidays with pizza being The last euchre party of 2001, held on Dec. 21 was hosted by Sharon Evans, Marg Saxon and Peter Hagedoorn. Eleven tables were at play. Winners were: high lady, Brenda Perrie; high man, Lloyd Smith; low lady, Kay McCreery; low man, Mary Huether; most lone hands, Isabel Day, Bob Bremner; travelling lone hand, Lois Schneider; tally, Bill Craig, Edna McLellan, Eleanor Stevenson, Mary Craig; 50/50, Kay McCreery. The first euchre party of the new year was held Jan. 4 hosted by By Betty Graben Watson Call 887-6236 887-9231 Happy, Happy New Year! Holy it's 2002! Now isn't that a nice round number to play with for the year. The tree has been turfed (not ours yet), the turkey bones frozen, the goodies getting scarce, the cards gathered and reviewed and the mem- ories of Christmas 2001 filed in memory. Yes, it was a good year. Life has returned to its normal pace — the families have gone back to their lives at school or work and served instead. It's time to get back in the kitchen again, so this week is ham and scalloped potatoes. I'm sure we will see our faithful followers back again for good food and good time. Looking ahead we are having Scottish night on Jan. 25 celebrating Robbie Burns Day. The meal will be meatloaf but as a special treat, there will - be the Scottish traditional Haggis for anyone wanting a taste. There will be Scottish music as well. On Saturday night there is also a Robbie Burns dance in support of the Brussels Pipe Band that we hope will be well attended. Over the Christmas season, we have had a few members under the weather. Comrade Frank Cardiff was in hospital but has been released as well as Comrade Lloyd Glanville who is also recovering now at home. We wish them both improved Eleanor Stevenson and Stewart and Madeleine Steiss. Winners were: high lady, Dorothy Dillworth; high man, Adrian Verstoep; low lady, Isabel Bremner; low man, Velma Sleightholm; travel- ling lone hand, Neil Halt; most lone hands, Shirley Verstoep, Ken Crawford; tally, Verna Crawford, Allen Edgar, Lois Alexander, Stewart Musgrove, Edna McLellan, A. Sleightholm, Kay McCreery, Mervin Schneider and Viola Adams. The next euchre party will be held at the Cranbrook Half on Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. "Darts for Fun" has started and last Wednesday, Jan. 2, 12 people played. Anyone interested can join. Darts will be held every Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Cranbrook Hall. )MeclicAlert ALWAYS ON CALL www.medicalert.ca For more information 1-1366.8413-3259 the routine returns. The kids at home are back to the long winter term of school with the testing of abilities coming in the form of tests and speeches and projects — lots of work but lots of long nights to get it done. Young minds are such a marvel. The Hetherington gathering in Brantford last week was great. The brothers, Bob, Bill, Clif and Jim are all well. Bringing the various family members together always makes the reality of heredity very clear — a nephew that walks just like Grandpa Short, a niece that has a chuckle and the humour of Mom and the stories of now and then. For it's the stories that brings us quickly up to speed with our far flung lives. Remembering is always part of any good gathering — the day spent swimming in the Maitland River, tackle football in Bluevale and then on to discuss outdoor hock- health. We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to Comrades Eric Ross and Debbie Trollop and family on the passing of Debbie's mother, Iona Moore. There are only 22 days left to pay your 2002 dues before you are not a member in good standing. There are only 38 unpaid members left so hurry in soon. The PeeWee hockey team and their families enjoyed a social evening at the Branch before Christmas. The boys played pool and darts and the parents brought munchies for them as well. They had a lot of fun and we invite them back anytime. Congratulations to the PeeWee team in winning the Silver Stick Tournament in Kincardine. They advance to the next level and we wish them good luck. Euchre was held on Saturday, Jan. 5 and there were 10 tables at play. The winners of the day were hard to beat. And then on to remembering the coaches who were part of the Wroxeter/Gorrie years and the changes in the equipment for a game of hockey which brought response from the 1990s set. Yes it was fun. Time of course went too fast but we're blessed that we enjoy the moments we do get. Several, three actually, distin- guished gentlemen of the village were seen in the garb of Kings as the season of Epiphany was celebrated in style at the United Church. Now all we have to do is search for the "star" that symbolizes our reason for being here in 2002. The winners of the last Christmas gift basket draw, by the Brussels Business Group were: Kim Yuzwa, Verna Milinkovic, and Ross Alcock. score of 94 were lucky Charlie and Ila McDonald. The second place winners were Dolores Howatt and Hazel Reid with 71 and third place went to Marjorie Smith and Vera Ahrens with 67 points. The lucky lone hand winners were Lloyd Appleby for the men and Eileen Sellers for the ladies. Euchre is every two weeks. The Sunday night singles dance saw a great crowd of about 90 enjoy the music of Blue Diamond Trio. Any members in good standing wishing to play euchre on Jan. 26 in Hensall need to get in and sign up this week. There is a bus going and we need to know numbers. The snowload was a little much for the north side of the Branch as it came tumbling down as well as the facer board and eavestrough. Repairs will have to be dealt with.
