Blyth arena campaign gets huge financial boost
A good start was made on reaching
this total when the last Blyth council
set aside $265,00 from the sale of
Blyth PUC. The committee has
-received pledges of $100,000 from
Blyth Minor Hockey and $65,000
from Blyth Lions. _ The
Threshermens' Association has com-
mitted $25,000 and local Broomball
has pledged $5,000. Several smaller
amounts have been pledged and var-
ious fundraising projects are in the
works.
The co-ordinating committee
expects the work to begin relatively
soon and has set Civic Weekend of
2002, the time of Blyth's 125th
Celebration, as the hoped for com-
pletion date.

_ Citizen staff
The Heart and Soul Campaign to
raise funds for substantial improve-
ments to the Blyth community arena
received a massive boost last
Tuesday. Huron-Bruce MP Paul
Steckle and MPP Helen Johns joint-
ly announced federal and provincial
grants to the project totaling
$1,402,000.
The federal government con-
tributed $701,000 through Industry
Canada's Infrastructure Program and
the provincial SuperBuild program
contributed an equal amount. This
money provides the local organizing
committee with approximately two-
thirds of the funds needed to com-
plete their ambitious program of ren-
ovations.
The changes envisioned will pro-
vide improved accessibility at the
front entrance, vestibule and in the
community hall. The concession
booth, washrooms and viewing area
are also in for considerable change
and upgrading.
The ice pad, nearly 40 year old,
will be replaced. The current pad is
from the 1960's arena as it was not
replaced during the 1977 renova-
tions. A new refrigeration unit will
also be installed.
During the presentation cere-
monies, Steckle recalled his days
playing hockey against Blyth teams
in the arena. He said, "They were
always tough and determined when
we came to play. I know that same
determination will be applied to your
fundraising efforts."
Johns commented, "In uncertain
times we should be investing in com-
munity infrastructure. I was told that
this arena is the heart of the commu-
nity and I think it is a great project
tied into the community."
Todd MacDonald spoke on behalf
of the co-ordinating committee,
which consists of Fran Cook, Steven
Sparling and himself. He commented
that when the North Huron council
identified this project as priority
one, "We knew that with this level of
commtinity involvement and com-
mitment we could succeed.
He went on to thank his fellow
committee members for their energy
and time. He also noted the time and
expertise that North Huron Director
of Recreation and Facilities Dan
Cousins had provided during the
committee's work on the successful
application.
McDonald went on to pledge, "We
will spend within our means."
The Heart and Soul campaign now
has the task of raising the remaining
money that will be needed to com-
plete the $2 million plus project.
