PAGE 21. From the Minister's Study in Minister asks, `Are angels ourlives?' promised Messiah - what kind of a fool did she think he was? Poor peas- ants such as themselves are not visit- ed by archangels, nor are they likely to be the parents of the one who would sit on David's throne and save his people from oppression! Well, a man in his situation had two options. Engagement was as binding as marriage so could only be dissolved by divorce. He could take Mary to court and have her charged there, but Joseph knew she would likely be stoned if he did that. He did not want her harmed, he still loved her even though . . . Well, he would have to ask two of his friends, men who could be trusted to keep quiet, to be present when he handed her the piece of paper stating he was divorcing her. He would take this informal route and divorce Mary quietly so she would not be subject- ed to public disgrace and certain death. Having settled on a course of action, Joseph wrapped his cloak' around himself and lay down for the night. He really didn't expect he would be able to sleep but he did need to get what rest he could. • • when we know there is one who believes in us; when we hear the words of encouragement as we face a difficult task, we have been visited by an angel, God's messenger, who brings words 'of hope to our situa- tion. "Do not fear" for God is in con- trol. By Rev. Ethel Miner Clare Knox United, Belgrave It was getting dark when the car- penter put his tools away. He had worked later than usual that day. A conversation with his girlfriend had upset him and working with wood had calmed his troubled thoughts. She had told him she was going to have a baby. His girl was pregnant and he knew he was not the father of the child she was expecting. He had looked forward to the day when they would be married, when she would come to live with him in his house. Her gentle laughter would brighten his days, would make his house a home. They had talked abut the children that would bless their home. But they were to come later, not now. How had this happened? He had never expected Mary would be unfaithful to him, would bring this disgrace on him and on herself. He couldn't believe she had been with another man. She was his girl. Had been his girl, or so he thought. She had told him a fantastic story about being visited by the angel who had told her not to be afraid. She was going to become the mother of "the son of the Most High" who would sit on the throne of his ances- tor David. Right! It was bad enough for Mary to be pregnant but to claim she was going to become the mother of the WMS meets The December meeting of the Women's Missionary Society was held at the home of Mary Huether on Monday, Dec. 3. Helen Elliott welcomed everyone and read a poem Jesus is the Reason for the Season. She also read Isaiah 64: 1-8. The secretary's report was read by Mary Huether followed by the trea- surer's report by Leona Armstrong showing a balance of $727.56 in the general-fund with $24.64 more need- ed for the allocation. Mrs. Elliott said that in the new year the WMS will be combined with the Women's Guild. Any money collected for missions will be sent to them. There will be no allo- cations. There will be one missionary meeting a year. Members hope to be still involved in missionary activi- ties. Jan. 21 is the annual meeting in Wingham Presbyterian Church. Six members answered the roll call by telling about their most unusual Christmas and reading a Christmas story or poem. r4 3 1 I MMINAMIWALMM011\ 1 3 1 . i Livinff Water 8 Cfutiistiaa Teliatteddp: Dec. 16 3 8 "We're EXPECTING!!" - Pt. 3 Isaiah's Sin- - bearing Servant 1 Holy Communion 9:30 a.m. - Sunday School 8 for all ages, 10:30 a.m. - Worship at Blyth Public School, corner of King & Mill Pastor: Ernest Dow 523-4848 www.tcc.on.ca/-dowfam Later in the night, Joseph had a dream. An angel came to him and said, "Do not be afraid. The child Mary is expecting is God's child. When the baby is born, you are to name him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins." That dream sent Joseph on a dif- ferent course of action. If the child Mary was carrying was God's child, the promised one, then God had selected him, Joseph, to be a father figure for that child. Mary's baby would need a father who would encourage him to learn the scrip- tures, who would love him, and gen- tly teach him the right way to live. That was a very large responsibility. But the angel said, "Do not be afraid." "Do not be afraid." In this season of advent as we prepare our hearts to welcome the Christ Child, like Mary and Joseph we need to hear the angel's words of hope for we, too, know fear - fear of cancer, fear of job insecurity, fear of terrorism, fear of being alone. Are there angels in our lives? When someone reaches out when we despair; when a friend comforts us;
