HE hears feedback on legal battle fund The threat of school closures again reared its ugly head at the Dec. 4 meeting of Huron East council. Councillors wrestled with the reac- tion.to their decision to fund a legal battle if it proves necessary to keep Huron East - schools open. Councillors felt there was consider- able misunderstanding of their posi- tion in the community. Ben Van Diepenbeek, reeve of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Twp. was acclaimed as warden of the county at a swearing in ceremony on Dec. 4. Van Diepenbeek has been involved in municipal politics for 10 years. He's served as reeve of the former Ashfield Township for three years, and is the current reeve of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh. Van Diepenbeek has been a county councillor for four years. He said some of the issues in the Councillor Larry McGrath stated, "We didn't hand over $20,000 to some person. We agreed to spend up to $20,000 to fund a legal fight if we had a need and a case." Mayor Lin Steffler and Councillor Joe Seili agreed, with Seili saying, "If there are no grounds to tight a battle then there will be no court case." Councillors Sharon McClure and coming year he will be dealing with as warden include water quality and the environment. The county will also be working on nutrient management, revising the tree conservation bylaw and dealing with the downloading of childcare to the county. Alvin McLellan said that their con- versations with ratepayers indicated that some people did not realize council was supporting all the Huron East schools not just Seaforth District High School. The level of public support for council's actions came under scruti- ny by the councillors themselves, when they had to deal with an anonymous letter concerning their actions. The letter itself received Little con- sideration. Sterner stated, "It is my feeling that if you feel concerned enough about the issues to write a letter you should sign your name to it. I don't even want to have them (anonymous ietters) come to coun- cil." MacLellan was slightly less hard- line saying that he agreed they shouldn't be dealt with if they con- tained accusations, but that if they 94eat 94:# Idezu 3 hand-spun pewter keepsake ornaments of Blyth's Heritage (limited release) 400<vreaste Acme ac. we ate Blyth Memorial Community Hall Built in 1920 Blyth Public School Built in 1896 Our Village Sign Incorporated in 1877 $15(") each tax included Special 3 ornaments for $4000 Single framed '45' Double framed 560' Triple framed '7500 Give a "wee bit of Blyth" to family & friends Sponsored by Communities in Bloom & the Blyth Business Association for village improvements and community ' awareness Available in Blyth at local businesses For more information call 523-9187 contained opinions he was not as concerned. The councillors themselves could come to no clear consensus about what the ratepayers thought of their stand. The responses, which were reported, ranged from two or three negative comments, to MacLellan's "about 50 - 50", to Sterner's "II phone calls and one email that were all positive." After a lengthy discussion a pro- posal by MacLellan to try to gauge public support was adopted. If it looks like a court fight might be nec- essary council will ask ratepayers if they believe that public funds should be used in this manner, to support public schools. The question would be included in the newspapers or mailed as a tlyer to try to reach as many people as possible. icifk Please Recycle This Newspaper STOREWIDE GIFT SHIPPING 1 5' oiFF Enter to win our gift basket filled with health and beauty supplies approximately $100.00 value With a minimum purchase of $10.00 beyond The Garden Path has something for everyone on your Christmas list... • bird baths • indoor fountains • garden art • outdoor large fountains • home decor items • Christmas items including sleighs, beautiful poinsettias, santas, snowmen.
