HCHS releases marine history
Hot on the heels of the Wexford
discovery last year, the Huron
County Historical Society, in collab-
oration with the Port of Goderich
Marine Heritage Committee, and
Heritage Goderich, has released a
72-page booklet entitled Celebrating
Our Marine Heritage as the current
version of its annual historical notes.
Editor, Paul. Carroll, indicates that
the document is not an all-inclusive
history, but rather attempts to paint a
representative picture of marine and
related life along the Huron County
shoreline from Grand Bend to Point
Clark.
The volume will be of great inter-
est to residents in the Goderich area.
"Should -you find a slightly dispio-
portionate weight of articles about
the Port of Goderich area, it is
because this site is the oldest and
most active waterfront along the
Huron shore," Carroll clarified,
"But, other areas, especially
Bayfield and St. Joseph, are well
represented."
In the foreword, he writes, "The
collection of articles is intended to
pay tribute to the life and times along
the Huron shoreline from the early
part of the 19th century to the mod-
ern era. This volume is not intended
to tell the whole story, nor is it pre-

sented as a complete or continuous

The Historical Notes also include a
large number of photographs never
used before, several published from
private collections for the first time.
The articles include several written
especially for this edition, excerpts
from community histories, selected
portions from historical books, and a
number of newspaper articles from
years ago — from both local and
regional sources.
"The Millennium discovery of the
long missing packet freighter, the
Wexford, lost 'in the infamous storm
of 1913, has sparked a frenzy of
interest in shipwrecks and shipping
along the Huron shore. As a tribute
to marine life in Huron County, and
in celebration of this amazing dis-
covery, the Huron County Historical
Society has dedicated these timely
historical notes in 2001 to
Celebrating Our Marine Heritage'',
the introduction reads.
The document was officially
released at the Blyth Memorial Hall
at the annual dinner meeting of the
Historical Society, Friday, Oct. 26,
where a history of the Wexford and
the 1913 Great Storm were present-
ed.
The publication. will be available
at a number of outlets, including the
Huron County Museum, the Town
Hall, Finchers, Goderich Signal-Star
and the Maitland Valley Marina at a
cost of $7 per copy.
