THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2001. PAGE 13.
The Huron County Historical
Society held a meeting on Thursday
evening, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the
Carmel Presbyterian Church,
Hensall.
Janeth Sangster introduced the
guest speaker, Dale Good, manager
of W. G.Thompson & Sons Ltd.,
Hensall Branch (since 1987). He told
the history of the company which is
now owned by the third generation of
the Thompson family. In 1924 this
company began business as a single
elevator in Blenheim, handling a
variety of crops in southwestern
Ontario. The company originally spe-
cialized in the processing and mar-
keting of white beans, wheat and
other cereal crops.
As well, a new seed division,
Hyland Seeds, was established in
1975 and is responsible for plant
breeding, crop research and seed
sales. Disaster struck in 1928, when a
fire which started in the office
destroyed the elevator.
In 1932 Wesley G. Thompson (sec-
ond generation) .purchased a grain
elevator in Hensall. In December
1950 this elevator was destroyed by
fire and by July of the following year
a larger plant was constructed and
was in operation. The Hensall facili-
ty was now on its way to becoming
the largest in the company.
Over the years the elevator has
kept pace with the changing needs of
producers by installing additional
receiving units, seed cleaning plants,
fertilizer blending facilities and over
three million bushel storage capacity.
In 1957 electric eyes were installed
for checking incoming seed. In 1981
Blyth's
Seniors
dress-up
On Oct. 24 Blyth's Swinging
Seniors met at the Memorial Hall to
enjoy a delicious lunch.
A minute's silence was held in
memory of Ferne Howatt whO
passed away Oct. 4. She had been a
faithful member of Seniors for many
years,
A number of members paraded to
show off their Halloween costumes.
Judging was difficult but Lawrence
Plaetzer was chosen as the best
dressed 'female' and Shirley
Nicholson was the winning 'man'.
The sing-song was held with Elva
Brown at the piano and Aubrey Toll
leading. October birthdays were then
recogniied with Mary Hoonaard,
Bernice Pierce, Mary Walden and
Marie Toll being honoured. Elva and
Jack Brown celebrated their wed-
ding anniversary.
Cards were played following the
meeting with euchre winners being
Bernice and Kay Hesselwood while
lost heir winners were Jean Nethery
and Mary Walden.
an elevator was purchased in Port
Albert. In 1991 a new office was
built at the Hensall branch.
With a total of 18 plants, most of
them in Ontario, Thompson employs
about 300 people and generates about
$380 million in annual revenue.
Canada's largest seed breeding
company is closing a 51-year-old
plant in Ailsa Craig. The plant was
formerly owned by Steward Seeds
and is too small by today's standards
to handle large volumes of seeds and
other products.
