Sports
The season is off to a mixed start
for the Blyth Atom Bulldogs as they
finished last week's action with a
loss, a win and a tie.
On Oct. 23, the team travelled to
Drayton and were whitewashed by
their hosts 6-0.
Thursday, Oct 5, Clifford came to
town and the see-saw battle ended in
an 8-8 draw,
The visitors jumped ahead in the
first, only to have Curtis Robertson,
off a play by Tony Bean tie it just a
minute later. Mathew Stevenson put
Blyth in the lead with an assist from
Roman Sturzenegger only to have
this cancelled within a minute by
Clifford. John McDowell found the
twine for Blyth once more to give
Blyth a one-point lead going into the
second period. Kenny Plunkett got
the assist.
The advantage was short-lived,
however, as Clifford attacked early
to knot the score yet again. Just sec-
onds later Bean and Sturzenegger set
up the play for Robertson's second
of the game, then Byron Broome, off
a Sturzenegger pass, gave Blyth
some insurance. Clifford came back
to within one, before Robertson can-
celled unassisted to pick up the hat-
trick. Stevenson and Robertson set
up McDowell to give Blyth a three-
point margin, but this was quickly
cancelled when Clifford scored in

The Brussels Bulletts travelled to
Thedford on Oct. 27.
Alicia Dick started things for
Brussels slapping home a rebound
off a Michelle Cook shot to give the
Bulletts a 1-0 lead in the opening
period.
Thedford came back with the
equalizer in the second period.
A fired-up Bullett offence busted
the twine with three unanswered
goals to put Brussels up 4-1.
Ashley Ritchie blaited a drive into
the net set up by Cook and Dick.
Rebecca Burton added to that as she
buried a loose puck from in front of
the net, cast there by Cook. The final
rally of the period was registered
with Dick's second of the night
remaining when she powered a
backhander by the Thedford netmin-
der after a pass from Cook.
the period's dying minutes to close
the gap to two. -
It was a nail-biter in the third when
Clifford popped in a shot, then held
off the Blyth attack until Bean
bulged the twine halfway through
the period. The 1 isitors continued to
put pressure on their hosts, tallying
one, then the equalizer while shut-
ting Blyth down. '
In Ayton against Normanby on
Oct. 28 Blyth edged the home team
6-4.
After a scoreless first period,
Sturzenegger got his team on the
board with an assist from Broome.
Bean tallied one unassisted, which
was followed by a Normanby goal,
just minutes later. In the dying count,
Lee Watkins gave his squad some
insurance going into the second peri-
od. Stevenson and Thomas Lecomte
picked up the assist.
Normanby came on strong in the
third with two quick shots to tie it.
Blyth answered with two of their
own off the sticks of Watkins and
Plunkett. Assists went to Lecomte,
Derek Youngblut and McDowell.
Normanby came within one, but
McDowell found the net to claim the
two-point victory for Blyth.
Goalie Sean Cook made many
excellent saves in the third to give
his team their first win of the sea-
son.
assists, and Steven Ropp and Jordan
Campbell with one assist each.
Saturday they took to the ice again
and won 9-2.
Scoring in this game were Matt
McClinchey with three goals, Chris
Corbett with two goals and one
assist. With one goal each were
Mitch Blake, Adam McClure, Matt
White and James Cochrane. Assists
went to Greg Bowers and
Christopher Jutzi and Cory
Chapman with two.
Action was not as plentiful in the
third frame. The Bulletts did register
the only marker when Ritchie took
advantage of being left alone in front
of the Thedford cage and slapped the
puck home on a nice feed from
Cook.
Nikki Berfelz continued her strong
play in the Bullett cage frustrating
the Thedford shooters with some
miraculous saves: Brussels skated
away with an impressive 5-1
win.
The Bulletts next take to the ice
