Menzies' recipients

The Jeanne Oldfield Memorial Arts Scholarship is presented at the F.E. Madill commencement
each year to graduates of Brussels Public School or residents of the village who are furthering
education in art, English. or music. This year's recipients were Joshua Gropp, left and Rob
McKercher. Also receiving an award at Friday night's ceremonies was Patricia Wilbee, one of
eight recipients of the George Menzies Endowment Fund. She is in the developmental servic-
es worker program at Fanshawe. McKercher attends the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording
Technology in London, while Gropp studies guitar in Stratford. Another Menzies' winner who
was unable to be present in time for photographs is Nathan Garland, who had to travel from

The F. E. Madill 2001 commence-
ment took place Friday, Oct. 19. A
number of area students received
awards during the evening cere-
monies.
Amy Douma and Nathan Garland
received McGibbon Awards which
recognize male and female athletes
demonstrating outstanding effort and
sportsmanship in sports during their
high school years. Garland also was
awarded the Michelle Kay Catherine
Andrew Memorial Scholarship as
the top track and field athlete accept-
ed at a college or university.
The Ontario Scholars were Ross
Clark, Drew Cornell, Keith Dow,
Rosemary Kuepfer, and. Tim Procter.
Kuepfer along with Nathan Garland
also were awarded their senior letters
(the BIG M's).
Several awards recognizing a corn-
bination of good school citizenship
and scholarship went to area stu-
dents. F.E. Madill Secondary School
Teaching Staff Awards were present-
ed to Ross Clark, Drew Cornell,
Keith Dow and Tyler Fenton. Corey
Rintoul was one of three recipients
of the Heather Pegg Memorial
Award which recognizes school citi-
zenship among those proceeding on
to higher education.
Nolan Krotz received the
Stephanie Lea Henry Memorial
Award for his positive contributions
to academic, social and extracurricu-
lar life at Madill. The Garniss Family
Award for good school citizenship
and community contributions went
to Tim Procter, and Rose Kuepfer
received the Wingham Lions Club
"We Serve" Citizenship Award and a
Student Council Award for her par-
ticipation in all areas of student life.
The "Above and Beyond the Call of
Duty" for significant contributions to
the school went to Colleen Van
Camp.
Arts related awards were presented
to four area students. Amy Barnes
received the subject proficiency
award for Grade 12 art. The Teachers
- Festival Liason Council scholar-
ship went to Justin Ruttan to recog-
nize his contributiOns to drama proj-
ects at the school. The Jeanne
Oldfield Memorial Arts Scholarship,
presented to students from the Town
of Brussels proceeding further in art,
English or music, went jointly to
Rob McKercher and Joshua Gropp.
Lee Sertsema was presented with a
proficiency award sponsored by the
Wingham Lions Club for achieving
the highest standing in Grade 10.
Amy Douma won both the West
Wawanosh Mutual Insurance Award
and the Huron County Award which
are presented to a student proceeding
on to further education in agricul-
ture.
Academic awards for those pro-
ceeding on to post secondary educa-
tion went to several area students.
Rachel Newman received the
Registered Nurses, Wingham and
District Hospital Award presented to
a student involved in volunteer work
and proceeding on to nursing. The
Doug Bieman Award went to
Jonathon Cucksey who is entering
his first year at the University of
Guelph.
The Huron County Child Abuse
Co-ordinating Committee Bursary
for a student who has chosen-to con-
tinue their education in the field of
childhood education or social servic-
es was awarded to Andra Dettweiler.
Nine tables played at euchre last
Friday evening at the Cranbrook
Hall. The evening was hosted by
Donna and Jack Knight and Sharon
Eens.
Scores were as follows: high lady,
Beryl Smith; high man, Mac Smith;
low lady, Helen Gallop; low man,
Mary Davidson; low hands, Marion
Harrison, Lloyd Weber; tally cards,
Eleanor Stevenson, Mary Huether,
Neil Hutt, June Fachter; travelling
lone hand, Marion Harrison; 50/50,
Dorothy Dilworth.
The next euchre party will be held

Cranbrook chtircli was celebrated on
Sunday, Oct. 21. Officiating was
Don Vair," who was the guest speak-
er. He and his wife Mary also enter-
tained the congregation with music.

Aiming for the Top tuition scholar-
ships, from the Ontario government,
which recognize outstanding ica-
demic achievement went to Nicole
Bernard, Rosemary Kuepfer; Lance
McLellan and Amy Ross.
The George Menzies Endowment
Fund Awards are presented to gradu-
ates of Brussels Public ,School who
have the highest averages of 11 sen-
ior courses that meet diploma and
post secondary admission require-
ments. This year they were received
by Katie Clark, Amy Douma, Eileen
Exel, Nathan Garland, Nicole Lowe,
Lance MCLellan, Amy Ross and
Patricia Wilbee.
The valedictory address at the
2001 commencement was given by
Rebecca de Boer.
Cranbrook church. Eduard Klassen
with his Paraguayan harp music and
the Manna Quartet from Stratford
will perform.
The Cranbrook community invites
all relatives, friends and former
neighbours of Johanna Terpstra
(Mrs. Nick Terpstra) and of Ralph
and Velma Locking, to an open
house at the Cranbrook Hall on
Sunday, Nov. 4 from 2 - 4 p.m. As
Johanna Terpstra recently moved to
Stratford and Velma and Ralph
moved to Molesworth, this will be
an opportunity for everyone to wish
them well in their new homes.
The community welcomes Mary
and Floyd Nesbitt, who have moved
into the house on the Newry Road
(in the Cranbrook suburbs) that was
previously occupied by Johanna
Terpstra.
Peter Workman, who was working
with the Perth County and Stratford
Health Unit has moved to the health
unit in Ottawa. We wish him well in
his new job.
